Community Theatre concludes season with ‘Social Security’

TERRE HAUTE — Community Theatre of Terre Haute’s main stage season finale opens this Friday, with the hit Broadway comedy “Social Security,” directed by Sonni Crawford. Written by one of Hollywood’s top comedy screenwriters, Andrew Bergman, this hilarious Broadway comedy first opened in 1986 starring Marlo Thomas and Ron Silver.

At Community Theatre, Jeffery Ford and Karen Crispin play the roles of David and Barbara Kahn, a married couple who are owners of a trendy Manhattan art gallery. Life seems perfect for them until the arrival of Barbara’s prim-and-proper sister, Trudy Heyman (Jeri Doty), her uptight accountant husband, Martin (Kevin Ward), and their mother, Sophie Greengrass (Linda Green). The Heymans have come to town to save their daughter, a college student whose priorities are not where her parents think they should be.

Things really take a turn toward the funny side when the Kahns introduce Sophie to suave, elderly Maurice Koenig (William Carper), a minimalist artist who is their best client. He offers to paint Sophie’s portrait and soon begins to brighten her life in ways she never expected at this point in her life.

Community Theatre last performed “Social Security” in 1994, with the late Jane Hazledine playing Sophie. Her daughter, longtime theater volunteer Peggy Apgar, is acting as assistant director and producer for this performance. “My mother loved this theater and shone especially brightly in this role, the last she played on the CT stage,” Apgar said. “It has been great fun working with Sonni bringing this show to life again.”

Additional performances of “Social Security” will be Saturday and Sunday, as well as May 30 through June 2. The Community Theatre ticket office is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday and one hour before show time. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students and youth. Friday and Saturday performances begin at 8 p.m., with Sunday matinees at 2:30 p.m.

“Social Security” contains mild adult themes and is not recommended for children. Community Theatre is at 25th and Washington streets. Learn more at www.ctth.org or call the ticket office at 812-232-7172.
