Crosley Radio Players return to Paris for dinner theater

PARIS, Ill. — The Crosley Radio Players return to the new dinner theater in the Tuscany Restaurant at Paris, Ill., on Sunday.

Tuscany, at 1218 N. Main St. (Illinois Route 1) will offer a complete buffet dinner, with drink and dessert, in addition to the Crosley Radio Players’ 80-minute show for $17 per person.

The show will feature episodes of “Gunsmoke,” “Your Hit Parade” and “Fibber McGee and Molly.” Many of the sound effects used will be generated live, just as they were when the shows were on radio.

Reservations are suggested, as seating is limited. The first Crosley dinner theater in January sold out. Tickets may be purchased in advance at Tuscany in Paris. Call (217) 466-1610. Buffet service begins at 5 p.m. CST.

“Gunsmoke,” which ran on CBS Radio from 1952 to 1961, starred William Conrad as Marshal Matt Dillon. Set in the 1870s in Dodge City, Kan., the show was considered the first adult western.

“Your Hit Parade,” a Saturday night mainstay on radio for nearly 20 years, featured popular songs of the era sung usually by the Hit Parade’s own stable of singers, rather than famous entertainers of the day.

“Fibber McGee and Molly” was one of the best known radio comedies, starting its 24-year radio run in 1935. It was one of the first shows to weave commercials into the fabric of the show, so as to not disrupt the show’s timing. Many long-running gags and reoccurring characters delighted radio audiences for more than two decades.
