Community Theatre presents Academy Award Nominated Shorts

TERRE HAUTE — Community Theatre of Terre Haute once again presents its annual screening of Academy Award Nominated Shorts.

These live-action and animated films come from around the world and include films from Russia, Denmark, Italy, France, Belgium and Canada.

They were all nominated for the 2007 Academy Awards in their respective categories. This year there are so many films that the program is divided into two sessions: animated films and live-action film, shown on different nights.

The live-action film presents many different views of the world.

While the Danish film examines the problems facing three women in a hospital dealing with cancer, the Italian entry humorously explores the effect of a strange substitute teacher on a high school class. “The Tonto Woman,” from the United Kingdom, features the encounter between a cattle rustler and a woman who was held captive for many years.

The animated films explore a variety of techniques as well as subjects. The Canadian entry, “Madame Tutli-Putli,” uses claymation to cover the wild train ride of a timid woman. “My Love,” from Russia, is inspired by a Turgenev story and is hand-drawn in oil on glass. “Peter and the Wolf” combines puppetry and digital images in use of the Prokofiev score.

This program is not rated. The animated films will be shown at 8 p.m. Aug. 22 and 2:30 p.m. Aug. 24. The live-action shorts will be shown at 8 p.m. Aug. 23 and 7 p.m. Aug. 24. General admission is $5 per screening; student admission is $3.

A combined admission for both programs is $7.50. The Community Theatre of Terre Haute is at 1431 S. 25th St.
