SOFTBALL SCENE: Summing up a successful summer in the Wabash Valley

TERRE HAUTE —  While the “Softball Scene” has been on a hiatus of late, Wabash Valley softball teams have not. This past season, several local squads have posted some very impressive results. I thought it fitting that they be recognized for their considerable achievements.

In men’s slowpitch softball, two local teams have made waves on the state scene. Crawlworks from Brazil and Cahill’s from Terre Haute have won numerous tournament titles and finished well in state tournament play.

Notably, the Crawlworks team won the 2013 Worth ASA Power Series Championship in Class D. Based on a season-long series of tournaments, the Crawlworks team won the title by a considerable margin. In doing so, it won tournaments at Bloomington, Kokomo, Avon and Crawfordsville.

In addition, it won the prestigious Strawberry Festival tourney title. In ASA state tournament play, Crawlworks finished second to the Brew Crew. As a result of that finish, Crawlworks advanced to national play in Columbus, Ohio, this weekend.

The Crawlworks roster includes the following players: Shane Chesshir, D.J. Chesshir, Kelly Chesshir, Jared Lumsdon, Jeff Lumsdon, Cam Lumsdon, Jeff Long, Dusty Batchelor, Randy Winkler, Tanner Glenn, Curt Peters, Michael Medaris and Tyler Bridgewater.

Another men’s team of note this season has been the Cahill’s Rental team. A longtime fixture on the local softball scene, the Cahill’s Rental team was aided by an infusion of young talent in 2013. As a result, it enjoyed a banner season.

Playing primarily an NSA schedule in the bronze/silver division, Cahill’s earned several tourney wins. Most prominent would be the McKraken Invitational and two National Invitational titles at Indianapolis facilities as well as the NSA Strawberry Fest tourney. The Cahill’s Rental squad has a season record of 50-10 against a very competitive schedule. Throughout the course of the season, several Cahill’s team members were selected to all-tourney squads.

Making up the Cahill’s Rental roster were the following players: Trey Ellis, Tylor Goldman, Ryan Bose, Zach Schultz, Billy Cesinger, Matt Baker, Cody Sutton, Jake Sutton, Bill Yates, Caleb Petit, Alex Sherfick, Jason Kempf, Brad Fyfe, Dalton Sexton and Colton Rupska.

In women’s slowpitch, the Labor Link team won the ASA Class D title as well as finishing in third place in the Bedford All-Nighter tourney. By winning the state title, the Labor Link team will also be in national tournament play at Columbus, Ohio, this weekend.

While winning the state title, Labor Link’s LaDonna Singleton was named tourney MVP and Ashley Walters, Traci Bennett, Jeni Morse and Kristi Manderino earned all-tourney honors.

In addition to the Labor Link players cited above, other team members included Annie Marshall, Cindy Fulk, Jasmine Rivera, Traci Sanders, Shannon Walters, Wendy Cress, Angie Lien, Amy DeBaun and Skye Hardey.

Also noteworthy during the 2013 season is the play of two individual local players. Zach Morgan and Jasmine Rivera have enjoyed considerable success as members of strong travel teams from outside the local softball scene.

Morgan, a Riverton Parke High School graduate, played with the Players Warehouse team. A combination of Kentucky and Indiana players, the Players Warehouse team competes in the USSSA “C” division and earned several strong finishes, including a third place in the Border Wars tourney in Owensboro, Ky. During the Border Wars tourney, Morgan hit a sizzling .838 and was named all-tourney.

In addition to playing with Players Warehouse, Morgan also played for the Dirty Birds, an Indiana-based team. The Dirty Birds won several tourney titles during 2013, including the NSA gold division southern state tourney. The Dirty Birds also finished second in the NSA Super Regional tourney and will advance to the Super World tourney at Rockhill, S.C.

Rivera, a member of the Labor Link state-championship squad, also is playing for the Line Off coed team out of Danville. Line Off earned the state coed title during the Strawberry Fest tourney as well as finishing strong in the Illinois NSA coed state tourney.

Congrats to all for their success during the 2013 season.
