COLLEGE REPORT: North grad leading DePauw volleyball in winning streak

TERRE HAUTE — DePauw’s volleyball team has won seven straight matches entering this weekend’s DePauw Invitational, including four straight wins last weekend to capture the Rose-Hulman invitational title.

Terre Haute North sophomore Mary Kate Etling paced the Tigers to the R-H title, recording 12 kills against Rose-Hulman and 16 kills against Centre. She also had six blocks against Defiance and two service aces against Webster.

Etling was one of two Tigers named to the all-tournament team.

Freshman Brekiesha Weszely of Sullivan had three aces for DePauw against Rose-Hulman and two aces against Centre.

In other volleyball news:

• Blazers go 3-1 – Vincennes University recently hosted and won a tournament with a 3-1 record.

Northview grad Kaylee Clark had a team-high 14 digs and Terre Haute North’s Kinzi Kiefer had six digs in the championship match win over Lincoln Land.

Clark leads the team in digs for the season.

• Valley natives off to good starts – Several other area players are having outstanding seasons.

Brittaney Pugh of Terre Haute South is second on the team in assists for Lincoln Memorial, while Northview’s Ashlen Buck leads Indiana State in receiving attempts, Terre Haute North’s Laura Mauer leads Marietta College in assists and Jessica Coombs of West Vigo leads her team in digs.

In other sports news:

• Loyola (Chicago) freshman Matt O’Leary of Terre Haute North led five players in double-figures with a team-high 22 points as the Ramblers overcame some early jitters to erase an early deficit en route to a 92-56 victory over All-Star Italy last month on their European trip.

The Ramblers connected on 13 of 25 shots from 3-point range en route to the victory.

• Virginia Tech punter A.J. Hughes had his best game so far last week, punting five times against Austin Peay for 220 yards (44.0 average).

The North grad had a long punt of 53 yards and placed two inside the 20.

• Eastern Illinois punter Scott Weatherford kicked a career-high nine times last week at Western Michigan.

For the season, he is averaging 36.9 yards per punt with two fair catches, one for more than 50 yards and three downed inside the 20.

• Marshall grad Taylor Duncan continues to get more carries on the ground for Eastern Illinois after converting to running back during the spring.

The redshirt sophomore scored his second career touchdown at Western Michigan on a 6-yard run last week.

Duncan has rushed 21 times for 89 yards, second best on the team. He has also caught two passes for 7 yards.

Last season, Duncan scored at Northwestern on a short run playing as a back-up quarterback.

Breegan Andersen, So., Manchester – Has one assist, six service aces and 34 digs.

Erika Davies, Fr., Franklin – Has played in one match.

Kaylee Clark, So., Vincennes – Has played in all 12 matches and has nine service aces, a team-high 153 digs and five assists.

Ashlen Buck, Fr., Indiana State – Has played in every match and leads team in total receiving attempts with 267 and in digs with 147. She also has four kills, 11 assists and eight service aces.

Oblong

Taylor Krick, So., Lake Land – No statistics available.

Rockville

Laura Payne, Sr., McKendree – Has one assist, one service ace and 14 digs.

Beth Mahurin, So., Murray State – Has 11 kills, two service aces, three digs and four blocks..

Briana Harvey, So., Rose-Hulman – Has three kills and two digs.

Brekiesha Weszely, Fr., DePauw – Has 78 digs (fifth on team) and team-high seven service aces through eight matches.

April Webb, Fr., Vincennes – Has played in three matches and has three kills.

Sara Baugh, So., Navy – Is serving as a team manager this year.

Mary Kate Etling, So., DePauw – Leads team with 76 kills through eight matches. Also has five service aces, 20 digs and 28 blocks.

Katlyn Anderson, So., Vincennes – Has played in three matches and has two service aces,

Laura Mauer, So., Marietta (Ohio) – Has 15 kills, a team-high 264 assists, 12 service aces 17 blocks and 72 digs.

Kinzi Kiefer, Fr., Vincennes – Has played in seven matches and has three kills, two assists, five service aces and 49 digs (sixth on team).

Terre Haute South

Katelyn Bishop, assistant coach, College of Charleston – In her first year on the CofC staff. Team is off to 5-4 start.

Brittaney Pugh, Sr., Lincoln Memorial (Tenn.) – Has eight kills,359 assists (second on team), 12 service aces and 79 digs.

Shelby Crncic, Jr., Arkansas State – Has one assist, seven service aces and 63 digs (fifth on team).

Taylor Hayne, So., Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) – Has 132 kills (second on team) and 25 digs.

West Vigo

Jessica Coombs, So., Wallace State (Ala.) – Team’s starting libero this season after earning second team All-ACCCRegion 22 honors last year. Ranks seventh in Alabama Community College Conference with 151 digs.
