Ramblin' Reck: Catching up with Valley prep golf teams

By Tom Reck
Tribune-Star Correspondent

TERRE HAUTE The weather has been great for golf and other outdoor activity in the past month and most of the summer.

Golfers, as well as football and soccer players, hope it continues for another month or so with several events on the links slated in September.

High school girls golf teams will wind up the regular season this month and compete in sectional and regional meets.

West Vigo, Terre Haute North and South vie for county honors Thursday at Hulman Links.

The Vikings and other Western Indiana Conference teams will tee it up at Cascade on Saturday in the WIC championship. Edgewood is the host team and may have a slight edge but other teams could contend for the title.

North and South seek good finishes in the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference meet a week from Saturday at Plainfield. South again received votes in the poll last week and is in the honorable-mention category with Washington and other teams.

Many of the teams in the area will be in the sectional at Forest Park while others will head South for postseason play.

A big crowd again is expected in the Spaghetti Open to be played at Matthews Park in Clinton this weekend. We understand it is the 50th edition of the popular event.

The Terre Haute men’s city tournament — open to all players in the area — begins Sept. 13 with golfers playing their first round at either Rea Park or Hulman Links.

Two-man events at Forest Park and Geneva Hills follow the city as well as the Terre Haute Golf Association Interclub.

Tee it up.

• Oops — We need to clear up an item that appeared last week but was wrong due to an erratic erasure on my computer.

Former Shakamak softball coach Beth Wernz is now assistant principal and athletic director at Eminence High School.

• Tom-Cattin’ It — Keith Jones is in his 34th year of coaching track and cross country at Clay City but has resigned as girls basketball coach. Chris Ames will handle that duty.

Son Chris Jones, a Wabash grad, is the new softball coach at South Putnam and will continue to be an assistant coach there in boys basketball.

• Initial action was recorded on a new cross country course last week at Sullivan.

The football field also has a new surface. Sullivan met Linton in its home opener last week.

The Arrows will meet their first non-ranked opponent this week, taking on a 2-0 North Knox team on the road. They opened at Class 2A power Southridge, which beat rival Jasper last week, before facing Linton, ranked No. 4 in the Class A poll this week

One of the winners in Illinois high school action last week was Martinsville, while Forest Park thumped Princeton 53-17 for its first victory in its first year of varsity football.

• The Chicago Cubs have beaten my sorry Pittsburgh Pirates 14 times this season, the first time to do that since 1954.

• Jordan Myers of Forest Park says he will play college basketball at Southern Illinois. The 6-foot-8 player, who is “down” to 240 pounds, averaged 17 points and eight rebounds last year.

• It was nice to be able to watch Indiana football and other games on Time Warner cable in Terre Haute. One of Terre Haute’s finest athletes, Tony McGee, was a commentator on the telecast.

• The season for live toroughbred racing ended Monday at Ellis Park. A big crowd turned out Saturday when special races featuring ostriches and camels were part of the program.
