Trio hopes college success carries over to Rex

TERRE HAUTE — The Terre Haute Rex have championship aspirations and three players who played key roles in NCAA championship teams are hoping to carry that success to Bob Warn Field.

Catcher Kaden Moore led Iowa Western to the NJCAA national title and now he has the opportunity to get to know his new surroundings as a future Indiana State player.

Moore has taken to his knew home well, hitting .276 through Thursday night’s game. The 6-foot-3, 225-pound native of South Sioux City, Neb., also gunned down two base stealers Saturday night.

Moore, who hit .293 for Iowa Western, is just looking to put in his work this summer and enjoy playing baseball.

“Just looking to have some fun, play some baseball. It is nice to take the field where I’ll be playing next year,” Moore said.

Rex manager Bobby Segal, a former catcher, likes what he sees in the big backstop.

“He’s going to be super solid bend the plate,” Segal said. “There’s no doubt in my mind he’s a pro catcher in the future. Receives it really well, blocks it, handles the pitching staff. Has that big frame.”

Moore’s joined by two University of Southern Indiana players as the national champions on Segal’s team. Matt Chavarria and Andrew Cope were mainstays in the USI lineup and Segal has sought to get them in the Rex lineup as much as possible so far.

“I just love those three guys being in our clubhouse,” Segal said. “They’re baseball junkies. They love being around the field. They’ll do anything, they’ll pitch, they’ll catch, they’ll pinch-hit, do whatever it takes to win.”

Chavarria served as USI’s closer, registering 14 saves in 34 innings on the mound. The infielder also hit .257 in 62 games.

Winning a national championship was unforgettable.

“That was something you just have to live through, man,” Chavarria said. “Once you experience it, there’s no feeling like it Winning a national championship, it’s just the best thing you can accomplish in college sports. It’s just so surreal.”

Cope said the Eagles were led by former Prospect League All-Star Kyle Kempf, who played two summers for the Terre Haute Rex. Kempf hit .342 with 27 extra-base hits and 23 stolen bases for USI.

“Kyle Kempf, he kind of led the way for us. We just followed in his footsteps,” Cope said. “Winning the national championship, it can’t get much better. We were a scrappy bunch of guys, we weren’t a power hitting team, we played a lot of small ball.”

Cope just hopes to keep his skills sharp and help the Rex go after a title.

“Stay sharp, stay in baseball mode. Just overall, just trying to be a better baseball player. Fun group of guys, we’re winning right now,” Cope said.

Segal loves having players from winning programs in the clubhouse.

“Once people get around winners, it’s contagious. Once you start winning, you have expectations and want to meet those expectations,” Segal said.
