Rose-Hulman baseball falls in Florida

Winter Haven, Fla. — Augustana College relied on a balanced offensive attack to top Rose-Hulman 12-2 as part of the Engineer baseball trip to Florida on Thursday.

Augustana broke open a scoreless tie with eight runs in the third inning to secure the victory. Kurt Schmidt scored two runs and had three hits to lead the offense.

For Rose-Hulman, Donald Stopka had two singles and Donnie Waters added a two-run double.

Andrew Stull allowed just one earned run in 3.2 innings with four strikeouts to lead the Engineer pitching effort.  Seth Davis struck out 11 in eight innings for Augustana in the win.

Rose-Hulman is 1-3 on its Florida trip and plays the Milwaukee School of Engineering at 10:45 a.m. today.

Softball

n Engineers win, lose twice — At Clermont, Fla., Rose-Hulman finished 1-2 on a busy softball Thursday that included a bonus game due to a rainout earlier this week.

Rose-Hulman defeated Michigan-Dearborn 6-1, then fell 1-0 to Rochester Institute of Technology. Ferrum topped the Engineers 15-3 in the third game of the day.

Whitney Strain had two singles and three RBIs to lead four players with multiple hits in the Rose-Hulman victory. Brianne Widmoyer pitched in with two singles, two stolen bases, two runs scored and one RBI, Carly Heibel added a single, double, one run, one stolen base and one RBI and Jessica Ahlborn also contributed two hits and one run to the effort. Oblong graduate Taylor Lockhart had a complete-game win in the pitching circle in her college debut.

In the second game, Heibel allowed just four hits and one run with four strikeouts in the pitching circle and provided a single for the lone Rose-Hulman hit.

Now 3-3, Rose plays Ferrum and Johnson & Wales today.

Cross country

n Sycamores honored — The Indiana State men’s and women’s teams have received the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division I All-Academic status for the 15th time in the last 19 years, according to an announcement Tuesday.

The ISU women received their 18th recognition in the past 19 years with a team grade-point average of 3.47. The only year that the Sycamores did not receive the award was 2004 when they did not compete at the regional level.

Drake was the top school in the Missouri Valley Conference, coming in at 27th with a 3.519 GPA. Illinois State was 37th with a 3.49 GPA and Indiana State 41st out of the 200 teams honored.

The ISU men received their 15th recognition in the past 19 years with a 3.2 GPA, which ranks 66th out of the 145 institutions honored. Southern Illinois was the top Valley team with the eighth-best GPA (3.477). Indiana State was 66th overall.

To be eligible, a team must compete in the regional championships and have a team GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Track

n Pole vaulter, sprinter sign with ISU — Two more student-athletes recently signed their national letters of intent to compete for the Indiana State men’s team, beginning with the fall 2013 season, according to coach John McNichols.

One of the top male pole vaulters to ever attend Indiana State, Kyle Johnston (Penn), is part of a vaulting family that includes his father Robb, the 1982 Indiana state champ, and his grandfather Jim, the 1954 Indiana state champion.

Johnston continues that legacy as he won the 2012 Indiana state title by clearing 16-feet-1, won the 2012 Midwest Meet of Champions by clearing 16-9 and placed eighth at the USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships by clearing 15-11.

Sprinter Carl McQuay (Lafayette Jeff) also has signed his national letter-of-intent to compete for the Sycamores. McQuay competed in three events at the Indiana State outdoor championships last year as a junior as he placed 12th in the 200 meters, eighth in the long jump and fourth as a member of the Lafayette Jeff 4x400 relay. He also competed at state as a sophomore in the 100 (19th), 200 (13th) and as part of the 4x100 relay (23rd).

A potential multi-event athlete for the Sycamores, McQuay has a personal-best 10.93 seconds in the 100, 21.87 in the 200, 6-0 in the high jump and 22-5 1/2 in the long jump.

Basketball

n Oblong wins — Illinois boys high school basketball games were played Tuesday and Wednesday.

At Greenville, Breese Central defeated Robinson 56-54. Breese Central will play Teutopolis for the sectional title.

At Altamont, Oblong defeated Woodlawn 64-60 on Tuesday. Anthony Johnson had 17 for the winners; Collin Meese and Jared Mayhew each had 14. Nokomis bested Louisville (North Clay) 58-42 on Wednesday and will play Oblong for the title.
