MARTIN, Tenn. — Indiana State finished a women’s college basketball game with an 8-1 run Sunday, enabling the Sycamores to escape Tennessee-Martin 73-71 in overtime.

The host Skyhawks had a 70-65 lead, their biggest of the game, with 2:41 left after a 3-pointer by Sydney Vanlandingham before ISU made its final run, taking a 72-71 lead on two free throws by Natasha Zurek with 6.8 seconds left.

ISU’s defense forced the Skyhawks to call two timeouts while trying to in-bound the ball and the home team never got a shot off. Coach Kevin McMillan of UTM was whistled for a technical foul after a review of the clock and Anna Munn added the game’s final point at the line.

The Sycamores led most of the way. It was 29-22 at halftime, and the visitors’ lead grew to 46-31 with 11:28 left in regulation time after a fast-break layup by Jessica Valley.

Then the home team went to a full-court press and went on a 22-6 run to take a 53-52 lead as ISU was on its way to 26 turnovers for the game.

Travecia Franklin scored at 1:12 to give ISU a 60-58 lead, and the Sycamores got the ball back only to miss a shot to clinch the win, and Heather Butler of the Skyhawks tied the score.

Munn led ISU, which won its fifth straight game, with 25 points while Racheal Mahan added 19 and Taylor Whitley 10. Mahan and Valley had 10 rebounds each, with Zurek and Kasey Johnson getting four assists each and Johnson three blocked shots. ISU’s defense limited the Skyhawks to 35-percent shooting from the field.

Butler had a game-high 26 points for Tennessee-Martin.
