WEST TERRE HAUTE —
I experienced a gratifying time at a local shooting range some of you may not have heard of yet, the Terre Haute Sporting Clays Range.
It’s a unique experience. Their specialty is, of course, sporting clays, set up to throw clay birds over 30 different angles and directions.
As I stepped into the clubhouse, it felt like stepping into a country home. The fireplace made me feel warmth although it was not lit, an overstuffed couch and chair to ease the ache in my bones, with the wildlife paintings on the wall that triggered old memories of past hunts. The smell of coffee made me drool for the taste and warmth, for the air has a slight chill in it from the welcome rain.
The echoes of a shotgun blast sounding through the hills greeted my ears, making me even more anxious to shoot the course I have never walked.
Doyne and Laura Borders are proud owners and greet everyone with a warm smile and handshake.
A sport shooting club, the Terre Haute Sport Shooting Complex opened Feb. 1, 2008.
The facility, dedicated to conservation, propagation and restoration of all forms of wildlife and natural resources, is located on 120 acres north of Terre Haute.
As a member you are eligible for discounts on all sport shooting. You will receive 10 percent off all snacks and beverages. Coffee and tea are free. They offer the lowest possible prices on ammunition and components and will place special orders at no additional cost.
They can arrange a fabulous day of shooting for you, your friends and family, offering to cater to any size group. The day can be as formal or informal as you like. You can even host parties in the clubhouse.
They offer sport shooting in the form of rifle and pistol ranges, sporting clays courses, five-stand unique shoot, doubles and singles traps. Professional events planning is available.
n Sport shooting venues — Clay shooting is at the heart of THSC. Qualified and certified Instructors are available to assist beginners or the advanced shooter. Sporting clays is a form of clay pigeon shooting intended to create an experience that reflects actual hunting conditions. Shooters move through course with stations, set up with variety of shots thrown at different trajectories, angles, speeds and distance.
n Five-stand — Five-stand is a great way to get a sporting clays-like experience in a small amount of space, with very little walking. It is similar to sporting clays, where there are different types of targets. There are five stands or stations to shoot from with six different traps. It’s like mini sporting clays.
n Trap — Traps is the oldest and original form of clay target shooting, fun and exciting for a novice or seasoned experienced shooters. Rifle and pistol ranges are available at 25, 50, 100 and 150 yards.
The range is located 3 1/2 miles north of Terre Haute on Indiana 63. Hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Visit www.terrehautesportingclays.com for more.
