ISU’s Manaea named preseason All-American

TERRE HAUTE — Junior starting pitcher Sean Manaea has been named a 2013 Louisville Slugger preseason All-American by Collegiate Baseball newspaper, one of 17 individuals and eight pitchers to earn the honor from around the nation.

Manaea is joined on the first team by Missouri State’s right-handed pitcher Nick Petree, while Wichita State’s first baseman Johnny Coy picked up third team selection to round out the representation for the Missouri Valley Conference.

Manaea earned another national honor in early December, being named the No. 2 overall college prospect for the 2013 Major League Baseball draft by Baseball America.

The Andrean High School product broke onto the national scene this past summer with the Hyannis Harbor Hawks of the Cape Cod Baseball League with a 5-1 record, a 1.22 ERA and a record-setting 85 strikeouts in 57.1 innings on the mound.

He was named the league’s B.F.C Whitehouse Top Pitcher and the Robert A. McNeese Outstanding Pro Prospect following his outstanding summer and his 85 strikeouts broke the league’s modern record of 82.

Manaea was a second team all-MVC selection last spring after posting a 5-3 record and a 3.34 ERA over 17 starts. The ISU southpaw struck out 115 batters in 105 innings, ranking 13th in the NCAA in strikeouts and in a tie for third on ISU’s single-season strikeout list.

ISU, the defending MVC regular-season champion, begins its 2013 season Feb. 15-17, playing four games in Huntsville, Ala.
