North too much for consistent Marshall

TERRE HAUTE — Terre Haute North had periods of absolute dominance Monday afternoon in the fifth-place boys high school basketball game at the Pizza Hut Wabash Valley Classic.

The Patriots couldn’t match the consistency of effort of Marshall’s Lions, however, and North’s final margin of victory was just 51-45 after the Lions scored the game’s last 14 points.

“I was very pleased with our start,” coach Todd Woelfle of North said after the game. “We came out with energy on both ends of the floor … we anticipated Marshall would try to trap us, and our guys stuck with the game plan and got open shots.”

Moving the ball as crisply and well as they have all season, the Patriots raced to a 17-3 lead, in fact, as Nate Jahn had four assists and a steal and Casey Vickers came off the bench to add two assists and a steal of his own. North also had five steals and a blocked shot in the first eight minutes.

“We had some turnovers and some careless play in the first quarter, and [the Patriots] jumped out on us,” coach Tom Brannan of the Lions noted, “but we fought back. We had some good possessions … and after that we kind of hung with them.”

Midway through the second quarter Marshall got a 3-pointer by Keegan Steele, a rebound basket by Cray Bloodworth and two free throws by Thomas Sisson that cut a 16-point lead to 25-16.

“In the second quarter, our energy level went down on the defensive end,” Woelfle said later, “and Marshall did a nice job getting back in the basketball game.”

Austin Lewis closed out the first half with back-to-back baskets that built North’s lead back to 31-18, but he injured himself fouling Marshall’s Walker Berner on a 3-pointer to start the third quarter and was lost for the rest of the game.

North responded with its best defensive minutes of the game, getting a pair of blocked shots from Calvin Blank and opening a 41-23 lead. It was 51-31 after a rebound basket by freshman Keshaun Sandifer in the first three minutes of the fourth quarter, but the Patriots — who missed their last five free throw attempts — didn’t score again.

“One of the reasons you come over here is to play big-time competition and evaluate your team,” Brannan said afterward, “and there was plenty of evaluating going on. There are some things we definitely need to work on.”

His team’s approach wasn’t one of those things, Brannan added.

“The effort is always 100 percent,” he said, “and when we take care of the ball and eliminate turnovers, I think we can play with anybody.”

Blank led North with 16 points and nine rebounds and Steven Davis added 13 points. Jahn finished with eight assists and Vickers with four steals.

Steele, who hit a trio of 3-pointers in Marshall’s late run, led the Lions with 14 points and Taylor Maurer scored 11 with eight rebounds. Thomas Sisson ran the attack and had six points, six rebounds and five assists.
