West Vigo falls 52-7 to Evansville Harrison in opener

WEST TERRE HAUTE — A 15-yard touchdown burst by senior Danny Creasey in the final nine minutes prevented a shutout, but the season-opening high school football game didn’t go the way West Vigo wanted Friday night at Jay Barrett Field.

Evansville Harrison, leading 15-0 at halftime, erupted for 30 points in the third quarter and pulled away for a 52-7 victory over the Vikings.

Midway through the first period, the visitors first dented the scoreboard with a 17-yard TD pass from Eric Blackman to Aaron Killebrew, then used a 2-point conversion run by the versatile Killebrew to go up 8-0.

The Warriors increased their advantage to 15-0 in the second quarter on a 4-yard TD run by Killebrew, who’s listed on the program as a wide receiver but took a direct snap on this play.

After West Vigo lost a fumble on its first possession of the second half, Harrison tallied immediately on a 28-yard TD scamper by Blackman to boost its lead to 22-0.

A four-and-out by the Vikings gave Harrison the opportunity to score again, this time on a 20-yard TD connection between Blackman and 6-foot-3, 240-pound Keenan Warren, who’s listed as an offensive lineman.

The Warriors made it 31-0 when they tackled West Vigo quarterback Jimmy Maples in the end zone for a safety, then 10 seconds later padded their cushion to 38-0 on a 60-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Killebrew.

The Evansville squad completed its 30-point third frame with 26.9 seconds showing on the scoreboard when Ke’Vontae Sullivan rumbled across the goal line from 6 yards out.

Creasey’s TD and Hunter Voils’ extra-point kick cut the home team’s deficit to 45-7 with 8:32 remaining, but Harrison responded with a 4-yard TD run by freshman running back Justin Lewis to close out the scoring.

The 8 p.m. game ended at approximately 10:45, so there was no time to seek comments from either coach.

Next up for West Vigo will be a home contest against Greencastle next Friday, while Evansville Harrison will take on Graves County (Ky.) on Aug. 25.
