Metro roundup: ISU’s Manaea No. 2 college baseball prospect

TERRE HAUTE — Junior left-handed pitcher Sean Manaea of Indiana State was ranked second overall among college prospects for the 2013 Major League Baseball draft by Baseball America this week.

Manaea is the only selection from the Missouri Valley Conference and the top-ranked prospect among three total from the state of Indiana. Notre Dame third baseman Eric Jagielo (20th overall) and pitcher Dan Slania (26th overall) are the other selections from the state of Indiana.

Manaea broke onto the national scene during the summer with the Hyannis Harbor Hawks of the Cape Cod League, where he had a 5-1 record and a 1.22 ERA with a record-setting 85 strikeouts in 57 1/3 innings on the mound. In his final five starts he was 5-0 with a 0.26 ERA and 56 strikeouts in 34 innings while allowing just 13 hits and one walk and was named the league’s top pitcher and outstanding pro prospect.

Following his sophomore season on the mound for the Sycamores, Manaea was a second-team all-MVC selection after posting a 5-3 record and a 3.34 ERA over 17 starts. He struck out 115 batters in 105 innings, ranking 13th in the NCAA in strikeouts and sharing third place on ISU’s single-season strikeout list.

ISU opens its 2013 season with four games at Huntsville, Ala., Feb. 15-17.
