South boys drop season opener at Bloomington North

BLOOMINGTON — Believe it or not, Bloomington North has fewer seniors playing boys high school basketball than Terre Haute South does.

But with three of the juniors in the Cougar lineup already regulars for the third straight year, the home team Wednesday night had much more varsity experience than the Braves, and that paid off in a 75-59 nonconference win in the season opener for both teams.

South closed out the first quarter with a 7-1 run that gave the Braves a 9-8 lead when sophomore Timmy Herrin got his third basket of the period with 47 seconds remaining. Jeffrey Turner, South's only experienced scoring threat, had a three-point play early in the second quarter — his first points of the game — that put the visitors on top again at 12-10.

But even though one of Bloomington North's returning stars had been sidelined with early foul trouble, the other two — guard Grant Sims and forward Tyler Truesdel — took over at that point, sparking an 11-2 run that put the Cougars ahead to stay.

“This was the first time on a varsity floor for a lot of those [South] guys,” coach Scott Ridge of the Braves said after the game.

South got back within 22-19 on a 3-pointer by Spence Tofaute and trailed 31-23 at halftime. Midway through the third quarter the Braves were still within 41-35 after Turner assisted on a Conner Shipley basket, then scored himself.

But Bloomington North got the next 13 points — seven by Sims — for a 19-point advantage. South got back within 12 early in the fourth quarter — which impressed coach Andy Hodson of the Cougars — but never got the margin inside 10 points again.

“I like their team. They have some toughness,” Hodson said.

“They're good kids and they played hard,” Ridge said of his team, “but we have a lot of mistakes to fix ... [the Cougars are] ahead of where we are right now. They're a good team, on their own court, and they did what they were supposed to do.”

Sims finished with 22 points and Truesdel added 15 — 11 of those in the first half — for the winners. Jallow, with almost all his statistics in the second half, added 10 points, seven assists and five rebounds, while 6-foot-7 Burt Bloom scored a career-high 12 and Adam Sowder added nine.

Turner heated up in the second half, getting 25 of his game-high 32 points in the third and fourth quarters. Kevaris Gregory added 12 points before being one of three Braves to foul out, while Turner and Preston Tofaute took game honors with seven rebounds each and Preston Tofaute also had seven assists.

“Turner is extremely good,” Hodson said. “I don't know what we'd do with him ... but I like my guards. Once [Gregory] got some fouls, we wanted to make sure we were driving to get him on the bench.”
