It’s summertime and basketball games are being played.
As reported in the newspaper, Indiana State cager Manny Arop is on the Canadian team competing in the World University and played six minutes in his team’s victory over Sweden.
Indiana players Yogi Ferrell and Will Sheehey are on the U.S. team that bested United Arab Emirates 140-46 in its first game. Ferrell had 13 assists and Sheehey scored 15 points for the Americans.
Canada was slated to play UAE in its next game and the U.S. went against the Czech Republic.
Summer League action also has begun for National Basketball Association teams in Florida.
Miles Plumlee was a top player for the Indiana Pacers in their first two games.
The Rising Senior Event will be played next week at Ben Davis High School for players who will be seniors in high school this fall from six different states including Indiana.
Two of the players on the Indiana roster are Indiana State recruit Byrant McIntosh of Greensburg and IU commit James Blackmon Jr. of Marion.
Games will be played next Monday and Tuesday.
Jackson Bohnert was a starter on Linton’s great team and plans to attend Wabash Valley College where Mike Carpenter, who has Linton ties, is the new coach. Blake Cesinger of Clay City also intends to go to the Illinois school.
Ernie Duncan will be a senior at Evansville Harrison and the 6-foot-3 guard says he will sign with Vermont after earlier committing to Evansville and changing his mind. He averaged 15.5 points, 7.4 rebounds and 6.2 assists for the 22-2 Warriors.
Jordan Hulls has completed his eligibility at IU and will play for a team in Poland.
Sandi Marcus has received his degree from Purdue and will transfer to DePaul where he has one year of eligibility remaining.
All-Star series set — The annual North-South All-Star Weekend for new high school graduates is Saturday and Sunday at Wabash College.
Three of the players for the South team are Kaden Lawson of South Vermillion who is going to ISU, Patrick Green of Shakamak who is going to Olney Central, and Sam Wolf of Terre Haute North who is going to Lincoln Trail.
One of the players on the North team is Ryan Keaffaber of Northfield who is going to ISU.
Terre Haute North assistant Fay Spetter is on the coaching staff.
Dan Sparrow has been the baseball coach at Evansville North for 25 years and is retiring. He had a 372-289-1 mark and guided North to two Class 4A state titles.
