Metro/Prep Roundup: Big ISU efforts can’t overcome Missouri State

Victoria Swigart had a career-high 18 kills and Morgan Dall 18 of her own, but host Missouri State won the last two sets of a 3-2 Missouri Valley Conference match Saturday night.

Loni Mackinson had 48 assists, Molly Murphy 19 digs and Cassandra Willis six blocks for the Sycamores, now 11-15 overall and 4-10 in conference matches. Missouri State is 19-9 and 10-5.

Final home matches for the Sycamores are Friday against Drake and Saturday against Northern Iowa. First serve each night is 7 p.m.

Football

• Greenville 49, Robinson 21 — At Greenville, Ill., Jason Richart rushed for 311 yards on 31 carries and scored on two long touchdown runs, but the visiting Maroons lost in Class 3A second-round play.

Tuler Hutchison passed for 433 yards and five scores for the home team, which pulled away from a 21-14 halftime lead with three third-quarter scores.

Greenville had 630 yards of total offense for the game, Robinson 531.

    It’s been a surprising season, but one thing the Sycamores haven’t done is to put together a big early lead and ride out the wave.
    On Tuesday against struggling Purdue, ISU finally added an early big inning to its list of accomplishments.

  • Western Indiana Conference to expand to 12 schools

    The long-rumored merger between the Western Indiana Conference and the five remaining high schools in the West Central Conference has become reality.
    Late last week, the seven WIC principals and five WCC principals voted 12-0 to approve the new alignment.
    “We now have 12 schools in the WIC,” proclaimed outgoing Sullivan principal David Springer, who’s serving as WIC president for the 2013-14 school year.

    Pitching dominated Tuesday’s opening day of play in the Rebel Spring Games for the Indiana State softball team, which defeated Bucknell 2-0 before falling 2-0 to Creighton.
    “The girls did a great job in the first game getting a couple runs,” ISU coach Shane Bouman said. “We leaned on [sophomore] Yvette Alvarez who pitched really well. We probably got as much as we could out of her and probably should have changed earlier so put that on me. We have a couple little things we can clean up and get a little better and we will be ready to go tomorrow.”
