PREP ROUNDUP: South Vermillion advances to final of 2A Southmont Sectional but falls to Clinton Central

CRAWFORDSVILLE — South Vermillion advanced to the Class 2A Southmont Sectional, but the Wildcats couldn’t overcome Clinton Central in the championship match. The Wildcats fell 3-0 to the Bulldogs in Saturday’s championship match.

Earlier on Saturday, South Vermillion knocked off Fountain Central 3-2. The Wildcats rallied from a 2-1 deficit to advance to the championship match.

In other volleyball sectional action:

• Class 2A Eastern Greene Sectional — At Cincinnati, Ind., Linton fell 3-0 to North Knox in the championship match at Eastern Greene.

In a Saturday semifinal match, Linton bested South Knox 3-0.

• Class A Covington Sectional — At Covington, Rockville fell to Lafayette Central Catholic 3-0 in a semifinal match. Turkey Run fell 3-0 to Covington in the other semifinal. LCC defeated Covington 3-0 in the championship match.

• Class A Clay City Sectional — At Clay City, the host Eels fell to White River Valley 3-2 in a morning semifinal. Clay City led 2-1 in the match, but the Wolverines rallied for the win. Bloomfield won the sectional with a 3-0 victory over WRV in the championship match.

Football

• IHSA playoff pairings announced — Robinson and Casey will both host IHSA playoff games in their respective divisions. Robinson finished 7-2 and will play host to Anna at a date to be determined, likely to be next Saturday. The Maroons are the fourth-seeded team in their portion of the 3A bracket. The Robinson-Anna winner will play the winner of the Breese Central-Mount Carmel contest a week later.

Casey is also the No. 4 seed in its Class A field. The Warriors will play host to Villa Grove next Friday or Saturday. The Casey-Villa Grove winner will play the Fisher-Carrollton winner a week later.

  • Rex fall to Miners 4-3 in 11 innings, forcing them into tie with Quincy for first place

    The West Virginia Miners tallied the go-ahead run with two outs in the top of the 11th inning Wednesday night at Bob Warn Field, then held Terre Haute scoreless in the bottom half of the frame to post a 4-3 baseball victory and shove the Rex into a virtual tie for first place with the Quincy Gems in the Prospect League West Division second-half standings.
    Terre Haute is now 18-8 in the second half, while Quincy is 19-9.

    The Vigo County Education Foundation (VCEF) will host its 22nd annual “Fore the Kids” golf scramble Friday at Rea Park.
    The scamble will begin at 1 p.m., with lunch being served at noon. This year’s tournament chairperson is Dave Piker, a current board member for the VCEF.
    There will be 36 teams comprised of business people and community members as well as teachers, principals and administrators from the Vigo County School Corp.
