Metro/prep roundup: South boys tennis advances at Crawfordsville Regional

CRAWFORDSVILLE — Terre Haute South conceded a total of five games in cruising past Fountain Central in a first-round regional matchup Tuesday at Crawfordsville.

The Braves (18-4) will play 15-2 Crawfordsville in today’s regional title match.

Terre Haute North juniors Justin Newton and Keaton Akers defeated Northview’s Kyle Moore and Damon Bass 6-1, 6-2 in the regional round.

The Newton-Akers duo, now 18-5 for the season, will battle a North Montgomery doubles team at 5 p.m. today at Crawfordsville.

Singles — Nathan Bogle (THS) def. Cody Keeling 6-1, 6-0; Krishan Kumar (THS) def. Austin Wright 6-0, 6-0; Scott Kellar (THS) def. Gabe Ward 6-0, 6-1.

Doubles — Reed Crawford-Trace Harruff (THS) def. Doug Keeling-Ladd Warner 6-1, 6-1; Matthew Gonzalez-Luke Yeagley (THS) def. Dallas Ogero-Dalton Griffin 6-1, 6-0.

Next — Terre Haute South (18-4) plays today against Crawfordsville (15-2) in the championship of the Crawfordsville Regional.

n Sullivan Sectional — At Sullivan, North Knox defeated West Vigo 3-0 and Washington Catholic advanced with a 2-1 victory against host Sullivan. No other details were available.

South Knox plays South Vermillion and North Knox plays Washington Catholic in Thursday’s semifinals.

Rockville 3, North Vermillion 0 — At Rockville, Bailey Vukovits had 21 assists and eight aces in the winning effort.

Sisson advances to sectional — Marshall’s John Sisson advanced to the Bismarck-Henning Sectional on Monday after he shot an 88 in the Mattoon Regional.

Marshall finished sixth in the 11-team regional.

    Sarah Burnham’s seventh-inning homer in the first game tied the score 4-4, and the Pomeroys took a 5-4 lead later in the inning on an RBI double by Brooke Jordan before the Lynx tied the score in the bottom of the inning.

    Pitching dominated Tuesday’s opening day of play in the Rebel Spring Games for the Indiana State softball team, which defeated Bucknell 2-0 before falling 2-0 to Creighton.
    “The girls did a great job in the first game getting a couple runs,” ISU coach Shane Bouman said. “We leaned on [sophomore] Yvette Alvarez who pitched really well. We probably got as much as we could out of her and probably should have changed earlier so put that on me. We have a couple little things we can clean up and get a little better and we will be ready to go tomorrow.”

    The Cream team at Saturday’s Cream and Crimson intrasquad game had Indiana’s top returning rusher and receiver and the Hoosiers’ top-rated passer from last season.
