ISU’s Underwood named first team All-MVC

Four other Sycamore football players also honored

TERRE HAUTE — Sophomore linebacker/defensive end Connor Underwood was named to the all-Missouri Valley Football Conference first team on Monday, heading a list of five Indiana State players honored.

Center FN Lutz III was a second-team selection while defensive tackle Russell Jones, receiver Tanner Riley and safety Mark Sewall earned honorable-mention recognition. Sewall is also a sophomore while the other three honorees are seniors.

Underwood was an honorable-mention selection as a redshirt freshman in 2012, when he also was named to the all-MVFC Newcomer Team. He moved to first-team honors this season by finishing fourth on the team with 76 tackles; had team-best totals of 18 tackles for loss and nine sacks; returned an interception 31 yards for a touchdown against Indiana; and also had five pass breakups, seven quarterback hurries, a fumble recovery and a forced fumble.

He had 13 tackles against Western Illinois and six tackles for loss — including four sacks, tying a school record — at Tennessee Tech.

Lutz missed the entire 2012 season with an injury after being a first-team all-conference pick in 2011 and an honorable-mention choice a year earlier. He is also a two-time all-MVFC academic selection.

Jones finished as the Sycamores’ second-leading tackler with 89, including 14 for a loss plus five sacks. He had a career-best 14 tackles in his final game against Southern Illinois and also had a fumble recovery and two forced fumbles.

Riley led ISU in receiving with 42 catches for 397 yards and one touchdown. He also had seven punt returns for 97 yards and six kickoff returns for an average more than 21 yards per return. He was a 2012 all-MVFC academic selection and was national Special Teams Player of the Week in 2012 for a 93-yard kickoff return against Missouri State.

Sewall, also on the Newcomer Team in 2012, finished the season with 87 tackles, five for a loss and had a team-high three interceptions and four pass breakups. He recovered one fumble and in the season finale against Southern Illinois had a career-high 18 tackles and also blocked a punt.
