Big, balanced Greencastle too much for West Vigo

GREENCASTLE — West Vigo scored its first touchdown against Greencastle since 2010 on Friday night, when Hunter Voils pulled in a Jimmy Maples pass and ran away for a 59 yard score. It came a little too late, though.

Greencastle used a balanced offense and two big lines to build a 21-0 halftime lead and a 35-0 advantage before the Vikings got on the scoreboard. Losing 35-6, instead of being shutout for the fourth straight meeting with the Tiger Cubs, did not make things any easier for West Vigo coach Jeff Cobb.

“That’s not a moral victory. A loss is a loss. We had some good plays. We played well at times, and there were times we just did some dumb things,” Cobb said.

Greencastle hit West Vigo with 235 passing yards and another 131 rushing yards. Greencastle quarterback Tyler Scott completed 13 of 21 passes for 235 yards, 150 yards and one touchdown going to Seth Brown. Running back Alec Pettit rushed for 91 yards and scored on runs of 2, 5 and 2 yards.

West Vigo managed just 183 yards of total offense and ran only 38 plays to Greencastle’s 62. Quarterback Jimmy Maples, who was under pressure all night, was 5 of 7 passing for 109 yards.

“We could get by [mistakes] last week against [Evansville] Harrison, but you can’t get by with that against… I think Greencastle is ranked 12th,” Cobb said.

West Vigo’s defense made stands and stopped Greencastle drives inside the 20 yard line twice. The Tiger Cubs reached the West Vigo 19-yard line before the Vikings clamped down on the Tiger Cubs’ receivers to end the drive. Greencastle reached the West Vigo 8-yard line on their second possession and the Vikings dodged a bullet when the Tiger Cubs dropped a pass in the end zone.

Greencastle scored the first touchdown of the game on its third possession. The Tiger Cubs drove 61 yards in eight plays, Seth Brown pulling in a pass from Tyler Scott for the 22-yard scoring play.

West Vigo fumbled the ball and Greencastle recovered at the Vikings’ 12 yard line. Alec Pettit scored the touchdown on a five-yard run.

West Vigo’s Zach Switzer intercepted a Greencastle pass at the Tiger Cubs’ 37-yard line. The Vikings picked up 9 yards, but came up 1 yard short on fourth and one.

Greencastle took possession at its own 29 yard line and put together an 11-yard touchdown drive.

Brown pulled in a 51-yard pass from Scott at the West Vigo 17. Pettit scored his second touchdown of the half on a five-yard run and Brown caught a two-point conversion pass from Scott to give Greencastle a 21-0 halftime lead.

After a scoreless third quarter, Greencastle put two more scores on the board in the fourth.
