Northview soccer teams pick up WIC wins against West Vigo

BRAZIL — West Vigo and Northview, girls and boys, went into Wednesday night’s soccer doubleheader looking for their first wins of the season. Northview scored 14 goals in the two games and earned two victories.

Led by Mitch Thomas and Mark Underwood, with two goals each, Northview overpowered West Vigo 6-0 in the boys contest. Northview is now 1-4-1 and West Vigo 0-4.

“It’s a good win tonight. Definitely tonight was very well played [compared to other games]. We’re looking for more wins like this,” Thomas said as fans celebrated his birthday.

And Hannah Minor scored three goals while leading Northview’s girls to an 8-0 win over West Vigo. Northview is now 1-2 and West Vigo 0-4. “It feels really good. I got my second in my lifetime corner kick goal, so that was awesome. I think it came together really well for our seniors to get to play together in our first win and their last time to play West Vigo,” Minor said.

Due to the high heat and humidity, officials stopped both contest at the 20-minute mark of each half for water break.

In the boys’ game, Thomas and Underwood scored one goal each to give the Knights a 2-0 halftime lead. Underwood made it 3-0 five minutes into the second half and Thomas made it 4-0 with 21:30 left in the contest.

Northview outshot West Vigo 20-7 for match. West Vigo goalie Donnie Ames made five saves, while Northview goalies Chandler Reeves needed to make only one.

Northview coach Ron Kiernicki said the Knights played to their strength.

“When we play to our feet, our philosophy to ticky-tack the ball, we play well. When we start playing over the top boom ball we’re in trouble. We definitely needed this game. A lot of our guys were taking 28 shots on goal and only one or two goal in or none go in. So [the win] is huge for them and hopefully it’s going to build them up for the rest of the season,” Kiernicki said.

“Northview is a well coached team,” West Vigo coach Culley DeGroote said.

In the girls game, Northview dominated the action on both ends of the field, building a 6-0 halftime lead en route to the win.

“We were trying to play a little more possession [game] and practice some new game techniques and strategies we’re trying to employ,” Northview coach Aaron Crawn said.

Good ball movement got Northview some close, open shots at the net and put the West Vigo goalie at a big disadvantage.

“[Our ball movement] was a lot better than it has been. We were moving the ball around through the midfield a lot better than what we have. We still need to use our drop passes a little better,” Crawn said.

Less than two minutes into the game Minor scored her first goal of the night. She got the second before halftime and then capped the night with a corner kick that curved back into the net, the second time she has done that in her soccer career.

Melissa Lummis scored two goals of the Northview, one in each half.

West Vigo coach Scott McClain noted the Vikings are virtually a new team this year with a lot of first-year players.

“It’s tough. We’re trying to improve every game. Win or lose, we’re trying to improve,” McClain said.
