Double winner: Jones adds Senior City to summer’s crowns

TERRE HAUTE — Tom Jones was the big winner in the Old National Bank Senior City Championship concluded Sunday at Hulman Links.

Jones finished with a 2-under-par 142 score to finish two shots ahead of Abe Nasser to win the senior division, while Larry Fossi took first place in the super senior division.

Jones won the city senior title for the third time after winning the city championship last month. Unofficially, he is the first golfer to win both titles the same year.

Jones and Nasser were tied for the lead after the first round played at Rea Park, both shooting 72, and they were still tied at the turn on Sunday.

Jones took the lead on the 10th hole and maintained it the rest of the way. He was 34-36 in shooting 70 and had four birdies and four bogeys.

“I had extra incentive. My brother [Bob Jones] is president of Old National Bank. I appreciate the support given in the sponsorship,” said Jones.

Nasser was 34-38 in carding 72. “I had three birdies, a bogey and a double bogey,” he said. He noted that he and Jones had tied for second one year when Ted Kaperak set a record in winning the event.

Kaperak and Scott Givens each shot 70 and tied for third with 145 scores while Fred Reynolds took fifth.

Denny Byram won the first flight in the senior division, and Alan Buell bested Kevin McCrea in a playoff to win the second flight.

Byram had 72 for the best score outside of the championship flight from the white tees. Buell is a former winner of the Indiana Super Senior event. He and Steve Paquin, another former winner, and Russ Campbell compete in that tournament this week.

“I was pretty lucky,” said Fossi after winning the super senior title and having a double bogey on the last hole.

He went 37-39 to shoot 76 and finished with 145, one shot better than Dave Nasser, who had 72 from the green tees, and Campbell and two shots better than Chuck Adamson.

Jim King won the first flight, shooting 69 in the final round. “That is a career best for me out here,” he said.

Other flight winners were Mike Webster and Dave Bays.

Ben Kiburis is 84 and was the oldest player in the field of nearly 100 players. He shot far better than his age both days (78-73) to finish seventh in the super senior division.

• Coming up — The Nasser Cup will be played Tuesday at the Country Club of Terre Haute.

The Rea Park Championship is next weekend as is the Gann-Byram Tournament at Geneva Hills.

The Old Man Scramble, Mundy’s Game and Idle Creek Championship are slated for Labor Day Weekend.
