Ramblin' Reck: Four prep basketball teams still in contention

TERRE HAUTE — The season now is over for all but four high school basketball teams in the area.

In Illinois, the Paris Tigers just keep winning and will try to keep the string going in the Springfield Super Sectional tonight against Petersburg PORTA. The winner goes to the Class 2A state finals.

In Indiana, two teams again won sectionals and again will vie for regional victories on Saturday.

In Class A, Clay City (18-6) will take on Oldenburg Academy (13-9) at Martinsville. Indianapolis Metro (9-15) and Greenwood Christian (18-5) are the other teams. You’ll notice, the Eels are  the only non-private school in the field.

In Class 2A, the 19-6 Linton Miners are in the regional at Southridge (Huntingburg) and will face either Perry Central (17-5) or Evansville Mater Dei (13-9) in the first game. PC and MD met Monday night since the Mater Dei girls team was in the state finals.

Austin (13-10) and Clarksville (21-2) are the other teams at Southridge.

Edgewood was another sectional winner, taking 3A honors at Northview. The Mustangs meet Crawfordsville on Saturday. Both teams take 12-10 records into the action.

In college basketball, the Indiana State women’s team is the top seed in the MVC tournament as the Sycamores try to become the school’s first women’s team to play in the NCAA.

Big Ten men’s teams have their tourney in Indy. Indiana and Illinois play in the first game and Purdue takes on Ohio State in the first round.

• Thanks — I wish to extend my heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the Sycamores, the Indiana State men’s basketball team, for looking so good and playing so well in the Missouri Valley Conference tournament, i.e., Arch Madness.

In the end, you lost to the undefeated, powerful Wichita State Shockers but you gave them all they wanted and then some before bowing. Thanks from this alum for the memories.

Your season will continue against some team somewhere. Good luck.
