Owen Valley, Edgewood in sectional final again

BRAZIL — Things haven’t changed that much in the Class 3A boys basketball sectional.

Northview was in the field for the first time and hosted the semifinals Friday night.

But for the second year in a row, Edgewood and Owen Valley will play for the Sectional 28 championship tonight.

Edgewood (11-10) outscored Northview 20-18 in the fourth quarter to earn a 54-52 win in the first game and Owen Valley held West Vigo scoreless for 6 minutes and 49 seconds in the second quarter while pulling away to a 49-32 win in the second semifinal contest.

Northview and Edgewood put on a championship-like performance in the first semifinal contest.

Northview’s Jim Mace put on an all-tourney performance with 22 points and 18 rebounds in his final game under the shadow of the Knights’ logo. Ethan Whitson added 10 points.

Edgewood was led by senior Clayton Settle with 21 points. That included three 3-point buckets and 8-of-10 free-throw shooting.

In fact, the game was decided by free throws — Northview outscored Edgewood 44-40 from the floor.

The score was tied 23-23 at halftime and 34-34 going into the fourth quarter.

Settle put back a rebound and hit a 3-pointer to create the largest lead of the game, 41-34, with 4:22 to play. Northview got back within three, 48-45, on two Whitson free throws with 1:01 to play.

But in the final 60 seconds, Owen Valley hit 6 of 8 free throws.

Whitson hit a 3 with seven seconds to play to bring the Knights within two. The ball rolled out of play and by the time the officials handed the ball to Edgewood less than five seconds remained and the Mustangs let time expire.

In Game 2, Hayden Corenfos got West Vigo off to a good start with six points in the first five minutes. The Vikings held an 8-3 lead over Owen Valley.

But the Patriots’ scored the final five points of the quarter, including a 3-point buzzer beater by Evan Wood.

West Vigo’s Corey Vickers hit the first of three 3-point buckets to tie the score at 11-11 with 6:35 to play in the second quarter. West Vigo did not score again until 7:46 in the third period and by that time Owen Valley led 28-13.

Corenflos led West Vigo with 15 points and Vickers finished with nine.

Owen Valley sophomore Cameron King drove through the West Vigo defense for nearly all of his 17 points and junior center Ethan Daffron netted 10 points and pulled down a game-high seven rebounds.

West Vigo tried to get the ball inside each trip down the court, but the Patriots’ defense pushed the Vikings away from the basket. The Vikings shot 41 percent (13 of 31) from the floor and committed 14 turnovers, six in the second quarter.

Owen Valley shot 45 percent (30 of 44) for the game and turned the ball over just six times while running a patient offense.

Owen Valley led 38-22 going into the final quarter.
