Mundy Bertoli bring home MIC individual cross country titles

INDIANAPOLIS — Terre Haute South junior Jackson Bertoli and Terre Haute North senior Chanli Mundy were individual winners in the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference cross country championships Wednesday on Ben Davis’ wet, muddy course.

Bertoli became the first South cross country athlete ever to win an individual MIC title.

“He stayed with the [lead] group in the first half, then pulled away in the second half,” South boys coach Kyle Walsh told the Tribune-Star. “Then he was challenged at the very end. The Indianapolis North Central kid [junior James Huffman] was coming on strong, but Jackson was able to hold him off.”

Bertoli finished in 15 minutes, 53.5 seconds, one second ahead of Huffman.

Team-wise, South finished third with 69 points and North eighth with 196 in the boys race. Carmel won with 33.

Bertoli’s teammate — sophomore Spencer Danielson, who placed seventh in 16:10.8 — also was named to the All-MIC team.

In the girls race, Carmel won with 24 points, while North was second with 52 and South was fifth with 149.

Mundy’s time was 18:18.5, more than 16 seconds faster than runner-up Kelsey Harris of Carmel.

“The old Chanli is back,” North girls coach Mike Dason proclaimed afterward. “She had such intensity on her face the whole race. I haven’t seen that since her freshman year. She was waiting for the Carmel girls to catch up with her … and they never did. She had the lead the whole race. We’re so excited to have her be the MIC champion.”

Before the run, Mundy dedicated her race to Cam Taylor and his family. Taylor was a North soccer player who died last week.

North had three runners — Mundy, No. 10 Jessi Conley (19:36.4) and No. 11 Lindsay Welker (19:37.2) — who were named All-MIC.
