West Vigo can’t control Linton’s big men in 50-35 setback

LINTON — Linton’s big men took control of the boys high school basketball game Tuesday night inside the Miners’ gym, leading the 17-3 squad to a 50-35 victory against West Vigo.

After falling behind 13-2 to start the game, the visiting Vikings slowly mounted a rally, pulling within two at halftime.

West Vigo senior Kyle Stewart hit a 3-pointer to put the Vikings ahead 25-24 early in the third quarter, but the Miners were able to regain control.

Six-foot-5 Dess Fougerousse had 17 of his 21 points in the second half for Linton, while 6-7 Austin Karaszia finished with 12 points, 13 rebounds and seven blocks.

“We started moving the ball better in the second half,” Linton coach Joey Hart said. “I think we only had three assists at halftime. Austin and Dess controlled the backboards in the second half.”

West Vigo coach Joe Boehler was proud of his team for competing, but the Vikings fell to 10-11 in their regular-season finale.

“Near the end of the third quarter we missed a couple easy shots and [the Miners] converted at the other end and it was a nine-point game,” Boehler said. “I thought for the first three quarters we played pretty well. Their size got to us a little bit and we didn’t get a couple big shots to fall.”

West Vigo plays the winner of Edgewood and Greencastle in the Class 3A Greencastle Sectional.
