Prep preview: Knights more comfortable with Weddle

BRAZIL — The Northview boys team is a year older, wiser and more adept with the basketball.

The Knights also are are more comfortable with what second-year coach Clint Weddle wants.

After an 8-15 season in his debut, Weddle is optimistic about contending for Western Indiana Conference and Class 3A sectional crowns in 2013-14.

“The guys are more comforrtable with what we’re doing in practice. We don’t have to re-introduce as much, and we are more familiar with them,” Weddle said.

Senior big men Ethan Whitson (6-6, 225), Jim Mace (6-6, 245) and Daniel Kimball (6-6, 240) got valuable experience last season.

And for Whitson, he’s now coming up on two years removed from major knee surgery.

“First and foremost, Ethan is a much better-conditioned athlete,” Weddle said. “His upper body, his lower body, that’s a testament to him getting outside and running in the summer time.”

Hunter Ragan, a 6-5 junior, and 6-7 freshman Drew Lumsdon provide more depth up front.

Christian Ellis, a 6-5 senior forward, provides a versatile outside shooting presence on the wing. Junior Joe Ball returns to a role in the starting backcourt, providing quickness and athleticism.

Senior forward Mark Underwood was slated to start the Knights’ opener.

Senior Kelly Hawkins and junior Gaddis Baysinger provide depthin the backcourt, where several underclassmen could contribute for the Knights. Sophomore Quinton Hayes and freshman Dylan Hyatt will also be vying for playing time.
