Metro Sports: Braves 4th, Pats 6th in girls prep golf opener

Belleville — Eight high school girls golf teams opened the season on Monday at Deer Creek in the Plainfield Invitational.

Zionsville, with an all-senior lineup, repeated as winner of the event with a solid 317 score.

Greenwood was second with 367 and Plainfield took third with 370. Terre Haute South was fourth and Terre Haute North took sixth.

Zionsville counted four scores ranging from 84 to 74. Lucy Stevens was medalist with the 74.

Shelby Johnson of Greenwood was second low with 77 and Morgan Reid of Zionsville third with 79.

North freshman Megan Ramer competed in her first high school match and went 41-40 for an 81 to place fifth. Sophomore Ali Danielson led the Braves with 88, tying for ninth.

“That was a good start for Megan … under the pressure of being in her first match. It’s too early to tell who the rest of our top five will be,” said North coach Abe Nasser Jr.

South coach Cara Stuckey said Monday’s match was a starting point. “It tells us where we need to improve,” she noted.

Both North and South will be in the South Invitational today at Rea Park. Tee times begin at 10 a.m.

South also will be in the Trojan Classic on Saturday at The Legends of Indiana Course. North was to have been in the Roncalli Invitational on Wednesday but the date for that match has been changed to August 31.

She is currently second in points in the American Motorcycle Association’s endurocross series.
