TERRE HAUTE —
The 2013-14 Rose-Hulman men’s basketball schedule includes 11 home games, a season-opening tournament in St. Louis and two matchups apiece with the nine Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference opponents.
The Engineers return two starters and one All-American from a squad that reached the NCAA Division III tournament for the second consecutive season last winter. Rose tied a school record with a 24-4 mark, was ranked as high as No. 18 nationally and won both the HCAC regular-season and conference tournament titles.
The 2012-13 squad also earned the NCAA Division III statistical national championship for scoring defense by allowing just 51.8 points per game. The year culminated with the first NCAA Division III men’s basketball tournament game on the Rose-Hulman campus since 1997.
Rose’s 2013-14 schedule includes nine conference and two non-conference home matchups. The Engineers will open the home slate against Carroll University on Nov. 30 at 3 p.m., then welcome in-state rival Wabash to Hulbert Arena on Dec. 2.
The regular season begins with a trip to the Washington University Lopata Classic. Rose-Hulman will square off with the host Bears on Nov. 22 and the University of Chicago on Nov. 23. Other non-conference games include trips to Millikin on Dec. 9 and in-state foe DePauw on Dec. 11.
The conference home schedule begins Dec. 14 against Manchester and features a stretch of eight home games out of 10 contests between Dec. 14 and Feb. 1. Other in-state rivals visit Hulbert Arena on Jan. 8 (Earlham), Jan. 15 (Franklin), Jan. 29 (Anderson) and Feb. 12 (Hanover). Any exhibition games against NCAA Division I, II or NAIA opposition will be announced at a later date if scheduled.
Rose’s roster features the return of second-team NABC All-American Julian Strickland, who averaged 14.6 points per game and was named HCAC Player of the Year. Senior James Pillischafske also returns to the lineup after starting 27 games last season. The returnees include six players who appeared in more than 24 games last year.
