BRAZIL — Northview’s Taylor Carter and South Vermillion’s Daphne Dunegan locked into a 10-inning all-star softball pitching duel Tuesday night at Northview High School.

Unfortunately, one of them had to lose.

Northview’s Shelby Dupin singled in the bottom of the 10th and scored when Tori Tilley doubled just over the glove of South Vermillion’s rightfielder, giving the host Knights a 1-0 victory on Senior Night.

“I was just so happy to get on [base]. Just happy I could be a part of the team and Tori stepping up and making that hit was great," Dupin said.

“I just knew I needed to make contact and not let everybody down,” Tilley said.

Tilley was the only one making consistent contact at the plate. The sophomore had three of Northview’s six hits in the Western Indiana Conference win.

“Tori Tilley came through and had some great hits for us,”Northview coach Bethany Jones said afterward.

“Their pitcher [Dunegan] threw a lot of dropballs and [hit] the low outside corner [of the plate] and [Tilley] gets a lot of extension on her swing and she was able to go with the pitch and send it to the right side almost every single hit.”

The loss snapped South Vermillion’s eight-game winning streak. The Wildcats are 9-7 and 2-2 in the WIC.

Northview’s Carter and South Vermillion’s Dunegan dominated this game — but in different ways.

Carter (8-4-1) struck out 19 batters, did not give up a walk and took a no-hitter into the 10th inning. South Vermillion’s Carlie Johnson, a freshman, broke up the no-hitter with a solid single.

“Taylor had a no-hitter going into the ninth inning and that was because she pitched good, she hit her spots, had a lot of spin on her ball tonight and her defense played behind her and we have not had that for a while. It was good to see all that consistency together,” Jones said.

South Vermillion’s Dunegan (3-4) let her defense do the heavy lifting. She scattered sixth Northview hits, struck out three and walked only two. She intentionally walked Carter twice.

“I can’t say enough about either one of them. Taylor Carter was good [and] Daphne Dunegan was just as good. It was a great ball game, we just came out a little shy,” South Vermillion coach Mike Andrew said.

“Daphne is really a drop-ball pitcher, a change-up pitcher. She gets a lot of groundballs and she’s got a lot of faith in her defense,” the Wildcats’ coach added.

While Carter limited South Vermillion to just one base runner, retiring 28 batters in a row before South Vermillion’s Johnson singled with one out in the 10th, Dunegan had to get out of jams in the sixth and ninth innings.

Northview’s Tilley led off the sixth with a single, was bunted to second by Ashley Hughes and moved to third on Whitney Halfhill’s groundball to the right side, bringing Carter to the plate. The Wildcats intentionally walked Carter.

Dunegan got an infield grounder to end the Knights’ threat.

Walking Carter intentionally with only one out put South Vermillion in a ninth-inning jam. After receiving the pass, Carter stole second to get into scoring position for the fourth and fifth hitters in the Northview order.

Once again South Vermillion’s Dunegan retired both batters on infield groundballs, setting up the deciding 10th inning.
