TERRE HAUTE — Terre Haute North and West Vigo opened their girls high school basketball seasons with convincing victories in Tuesday’s opening round of the Terre Haute Savings Bank Tip-Off Tournament inside the Vikings’ “Green Dome” gym.

North led 21-6 after the first quarter and coasted to a 61-39 triumph over Greencastle, then West Vigo pulled away from Western Indiana Conference foe South Vermillion to win 52-27.

“We were fortunate that we shot the ball real well in the first quarter and first half,” North coach Mike Allen told the Tribune-Star afterward. “Layne [Curley] shot the ball real well and Jennifer Bendickson hit a couple shots that helped out a lot. The second half, we gave up some dribble penetrations that I wasn’t real pleased with. … Overall, though, it was a good win for us.”

This was the 100th victory of Allen’s head-coaching career.

Curley, a 5-foot-9 senior guard, paced the Patriots with 17 points — all in the first half — and Adrienne Pritchard added 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Greencastle’s leading scorer was Callen Taylor with 11 points.

In West Vigo’s win, the host school turned a 5-4 lead at the end of the first quarter into 22-13 by halftime and 35-24 by the end of the third quarter. Then the Vikings outscored South Vermillion 17-3 in the final period to secure the outcome.

“Being it was the first game of the season, we’ll accept a little bit of sloppiness,” said coach Ryan Easton of the Vikings, who made only 16 of 56 field-goal attempts (28.6 percent) and committed 18 turnovers. “It wasn’t a very pretty game.”

To further illustrate his point, consider that South Vermillion connected on only 10 of 50 field-goal attempts (20 percent) and committed 30 turnovers.

Shyanne Elkins was the Vikings’ only double-figure scorer with 14 points. She also contributed nine boards and five steals. Lauren Hixon topped the Wildcats with 10 points.

Looking ahead, Easton knows his squad will need to play much better Thursday when it meets North in the semifinals.

“They lit it up tonight from 3-point range,” he said of the Patriots. “We definitely have our work cut out for us, but we’ll show up to play.”
