Expect some frosty games in Fall Classic

TERRE HAUTE — It’s October and time for the Fall Classic.

Based on some weather reports, the weather could be winter-like for some of the games between St. Louis and Boston, but that’s nothing new. And it won’t hamper the play on the diamond.

The Red Sox and Cardinals are meeting for the fourth time in the Series. St. Louis won in seven games in 1946 and 1967 but Boston swept the Redbirds in their last meeting in 2004.

Pitchers  who possibly could be keys to success for the teams are St. Louis rookie phenom Michael Wacha, who was 2-0 with an 0.00 ERA in the NL Championship Series, and Koji Uehara, who won one game and saved three for Boston in the AL Championship Series.

Boston rates a slight edge since the AL has home-field advantage due to All-Star success, but we’ll take the Cardinals to win in six games.

• Honor for Adam — Adam LaGrange will be one of the golfers honored at the Indiana Golf Foundation banquet tonight at the Meridian Hills Country Club in Indianapolis.

The Terre Haute North senior will be recognized as junior boys player of the year, an honor he earned with his play in state events.

LaGrange was medalist in boys state qualifying at Harrison Hills, then qualified for match play in the big field and reached the Elite Eight.

He ranked second in Masters point totals with three top-five finishes, had a top-five finish in a Pepsi Mountain Dew tournament and finished 11th in the Hoosier Junior Championships played earlier in the month at Columbus.

Former PGA Tour player Chris Smith and PGA President Ted Bishop will be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Bishop has been on the staff at the Legends of Indiana Course since it opened. Before that, he was at the Phil Harris Course in Linton where he began a major tournament in honor of Harris that attracted top professional and college athletes and coaches.

• Tournaments set — Locally, more than 150 golfers took part in the Providence Medical Center/St. George two-man scramble played Sunday at Rea Park.

Once again, the women from St. George provided good food for the players and others at the course.

Two more events are slated at Hulman Links that will just about wind up the tournament season in the area. A backward scramble is set for Sunday. Play begins at noon. The Final Fling is Nov. 3. Play should begin at 11 a.m. since we all change our clocks that weekend.

In the semifinals, North Central bested MIC rival Carmel 3-2 and Park Tudor defeated Evansville Memorial 4-1.

• In football, Linton and North Vermillion will take unbeaten marks into the Indiana tournament. Casey goes for another perfect regular-season mark this week in Illinois, facing rival Marshall after posting an impressive victory against Robinson last week.

Greencastle defeated Owen Valley in its last regular-season game to finish with an 8-1 record after being unbeaten in the regular season last year, which totals up to a two-year regular-season mark of 17-1.

South Putnam was the only team to beat the Tiger Cubs and the Eagles also finished 8-1, losing to Tri-West.

• Tom-Cattin’ It — Since Jay Cutler did not have a touchdown pass before being injured Sunday, his string of games with at least one touchdown pass will end at 12, a record for the Chicago Bears.

• Ben Davis defeated Carmel in the final regular-season game to claim a share of the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference football title with Center Grove.

n The date for the NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway is July 27.

• Larry Bird has put his home in Naples, Fla., up for sale.

• Barry Larkin is one former Cincinnati player who has been mentioned as the possible new manager of the Reds. Jim Leyland has stepped down as manager at Detroit as one of the winningest managers in baseball.

• Northwestern had a peanut-free game last week when the Wildcats played host to Minnesota.
