Prep football: Sullivan bounces back for WIC victory

CLINTON — Sullivan was a winner in Western Indiana Conference high school football Friday night, defeating South Vermillion 35-14.

Michael Willis scored once and had two scoring passes — both to Michael Hutchcraft — in the game as the Arrows rebounded from last week’s defeat against Brown County.

South Vermillion scored first and last in the Senior Night contest. Daniel Shew had eight of the Wildcats’ points, scoring the final TD in the final minute and kicking two extra points.

SV junior quarterback Jordan Branz had a 40-yard run in the opening drive of the game as the Wildcats went 71 yards to score with Tanner Smith going a yard for the score.

Sullivan responded with a a 63-yard drive with Cameron Marx getting the touchdown on a 24-yard run. He had a good night for the Arrows.

Sullivan had four turnovers in the game — one of them in the second period — but the Wildcats did not score on any of them.

The Arrows went 66 yards in six plays to go ahead 14-7; Willis had a 12-yard run to cap the drive in the second period.

The Arrows went up 21-7, blocking a punt and recovering it in the end zone, and had that lead at halftime.

Willis and Hutchcraft hooked up on Sullivan’s two scoring plays in the second half. One play went for two yards, the other for 46 to start the fourth frame.

Willis and freshman Trevor Magill also hooked up on a 58-yard run on Sullivan’s 80-yard scoring drive in the third canto.

The Arrows are 3-2 in the WIC and will take a 5-3 mark into the reguar-season finale at home against West Vigo. South Vermillion is 2-6 and 1-4 in the league and closes the regular season at Edgewood.
