NFL season offering some early surprises

TERRE HAUTE — The third week of the National Football League ended Monday night when Oakland played at Denver.

Some interesting results cropped up in headlines and stories in Monday’s newspapers and were hashed out on some Sunday night sports shows.

Indianapolis over San Francisco 27-7 surprised most folks. The Colts hopefully are on the right track and will continue to do well against 0-3 Jacksonville. That’s one they should win.

Carolina beating the New York Giants and shutting them out 38-0 was a stunner. The Giants are 0-3 and off to their worst start since 1996.

Cincinnati’s 34-30 victory over Green Bay was not a major upset but the Pack are 1-2 and the Bengals are 2-1.

Chicago beat up on Pittsburgh in the Sunday night game to go to 3-0. The Steelers? They are 0-3.

Detroit dumped Washington at Washington, beating the Redskins away from Detroit for the first time since 1939, a 21-game streak. The Lions are 2-1 and have the Bears at home this week in what could be a good one and key in the NFC North.

Washington is 0-3 like the Giants, Steelers, Jaguars and Tampa Bay.

n So long — New York Yankee fans said goodbye to two great ones in the final home game for the Yankees.

Mariano Rivera and Andy Pettitte are ending great careers that likely will end this week since the Yankees’ postseason chances are just about done.

Pettitte never has had a losing record with New York or Houston but is 10-11 going into the final week. It would be nice if he could go out without that first losing mark.

Current Yankee Derek Jeter, meanwhile, played just 17 games with the Yankees this season. Some say he may be retiring.

A-Rod, meanwhile, set a record when he slammed his 24th grand-slam homer over the weekend. Lou Gehrig held the old mark.

  • Andy Amey: Just a small trip to talk about this time

To paraphrase Carl Spackler, the heavy stuff’s not going to come for quite awhile. So while it’s true that I’m back from a week’s vacation, it’s not time — yet — for the big vacation column. Trips to Noblesville, Brunswick and Reelsville, while providing some nice family time, don’t really have the cachet to fill newspaper space.
