South comes up big on Senior Night

TERRE HAUTE — Friday proved to be a big night of 2012 firsts for Terre Haute South High School’s football team in the Braves’ final regular-season game.

Sophomore Michael Watt ran for 145 yards on 19 carries, giving the Braves their first 100-yard rushing game of the season.

South’s 45-7 victory over Lawrence North at Bob Clements Field was the Braves’ first Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference victory — and first win over a Class 5A opponent — of the season.

Tyler Seibert also surpassed 100 yards, catching nine passes for 101 yards and two touchdowns on his Senior Night.

Seibert played a big role in the Braves’ highest point total against a MIC opponent since 1999 when they put up 69 in a win at Indianapolis North Central. South also beat Warren Central 52-21 that season.

Senior Jonathan Weakley got the scoring started quickly for the Braves, taking the opening kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown.

Watt had runs of 20 and 14 yards to lead the South offense’s first scoring drive, which was capped by a 4-yard run by Jacob Johnson out of the wildcat formation.

After Lawrence North pulled within 14-7 on a 24-yard run by John Schail, South put together another drive.

Danny Etling threw a strike to Seibert on a quick-out pattern for a 6-yard TD play with 18 seconds left in the first quarter.

South did a nice job with a two-minute drill before halftime and Etling threw a bomb down the sideline to Seibert, who got out of bounds with 0.2 seconds on the clock.

Watt scored on a sweep out of the wildcat to put the Braves ahead 28-7 at the half.

Watt surpassed 100 yards rushing early in the third quarter on a slippery 19-yard run that put the Braves inside the 5-yard line.

Seibert then caught his second TD of the game on a fade route from 13 yards out.

Etling finished 13 of 19 passing for 126 yards and two touchdowns. South rushed for 209 yards on 35 carries.

The Braves’ defense held Lawrence North (0-9, 0-6) to a total of 140 yards.
