TERRE HAUTE — First team to 40 points wins?

Coach Teri Moren and the Indiana State women might love that scenario tonight when they host Marshall, since the Sycamores have allowed only 39 points in both their exhibition win over Bellarmine and in Friday’s surprising 69-39 blowout of Eastern Illinois.

Tipoff is 7:05 p.m. as Indiana State looks for its third 2-0 start in the past four seasons, having also won its first two games in the 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 seasons.

Anna Munn had a game-high 18 points against Eastern Illinois, while Taylor Whitley scored 14 and Racheal Mahan had 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Jessica Valley, starting at power forward for the first time, grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds while the Sycamores had assists on 21 of their 26 baskets — Whitley getting five; Valley, Munn and Natasha Zurek four each; and Kasey Johnson three.

But the story that night was defense more than offense. ISU held its visitors to just nine first-half points on 16-percent shooting and the Panthers — a veteran team with a high-powered offense — shot just 27 percent for the game.

Marshall is also 1-0, having beaten Radford 65-63 in its opening game.

Although the Thundering Herd has four starters and nine letterwinners back from a 16-14 team a year ago, Marshall was picked 12th in the Conference USA preseason poll (ISU was picked to finish seventh in the Missouri Valley Conference).

Sophomore Shay Weaver is Marshall’s leading returning scorer, averaging 6.1 points per game last year, and had 19 points off the bench in the win over Radford. Suporia Dickens added 12 points for the Herd in the opener.

This is the third game between the two schools. ISU beat Marshall 65-35 during the 1972-73 season, and Marshall won 102-90 in the 1979-80 season.

Tipoff — 7:05 p.m. in Hulman Center.
