Metro/prep sports: Lions split first four games

Marshall’s boys basketball team went 2-2 in Capital Classic games played Friday and Saturday.

The Lions were 1-2 in pool-play games and defeated Red Hill 56-54 to take seventh place.

Mount Carmel won the Classic title, besting Olney 61-39 in the title game.


Capital Classic

Marshall scores — Marshall 58, Mt. Carmel 55; Lawrenceville 55, Marshall 51; Pinckneyville 52, Marshall 39; Marshall 56, Red Hill 54

In other boys basketball:

• Linton 56, North Knox 46 — At Linton, the Miners used a 20-3 third-period run to erase a halftime deficit and win their opener Saturday night.

The visiting Warriors had a 9-7 lead after one stop and fronted 19-18 at halftime. Linton took a 38-22 lead into the final frame.

Bryant Jackson led the winners with 16 points. Linton, 1-0, hosts Owen Valley on Friday and the 0-1 Warriors play Tuesday at Union (Dugger).

• Maroons get first win — At Effingham, Robinson defeated Charleston 53-47 on Saturday in the St. Anthony Tournament to improve to 1-3 for the season.

Breese Central downed the Maroons 75-62 on Friday despite 23 points by Michael Akande and 14 by Parker Bopp.

• Casey 0-4 — At Robinson, Casey lost to Mt. Carmel and Charleston on Saturday to finish fifth in the Robinson Thanksgiving Tournament.

Kyleigh Decker was on the all-tournament team that included Kaydie Grooms and Breah Keim of Marshall’s championship team and 2013 Miss Basketball Tyra Buss of Mt. Carmel.
