Northview opens with tough loss to Vincennes Lincoln in boys basketball

BRAZIL — Coaches learn more about their team playing quality opponents than a weak opponent.

That is why Northview coach Clint Weddle wasn’t down after Vincennes Lincoln defeated the Knights 69-55 in the opening game of the boys high school basketball season for both teams.

Vincennes, with a talented inside duo of Avery Mickens and Josh Sprinkle, got a big night from guards Brandt Nowaskie and Conner Barmes while shooting 58 percent (25 of 43) from the floor, including 8 of 13 from 3-point range.

Nowaskie scored 17 points, Barmes added 14 and Mickens chipped in with 12. Early foul trouble limited Sprinkle to six.

Northview was led by senior Ethan Whitson with 15 points and Jim Mace with 11 points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots. Sophomore Quinton Hayes came off the bench to hit 4 of 6 from beyond the long-range arc in the fourth quarter for 12 points.

“[The Alices are] very talented [and] we knew that. That’s the good thing about our schedule. I like the way [our schedule] starts out. I’d rather start out playing some guys we know are going to come in here give us a good opportunity to see what we need to work on early, and they sure did that tonight,” Weddle said.

The Knights didn’t shoot that poorly themselves, hitting 47 percent [19 of 40] from the floor. Northview’s trouble was 15 turnovers.

Whitson hit a 3-pointer from the baseline to tie the score at 11-11 in the first quarter, but the Alices closed the quarter with an 8-4 run and a 19-15 lead heading into the second period.

Northview got the ball to Mace inside on the blocks for two baskets to open the second quarter. The score was tied 19-19. But the Alices went on a 12-2 run with Barmes and Nowaskie leading the way.

Vincennes led 41-28 at halftime and broke the game open in the third period, outscoring Northview 17-4. The Knights hit just 2 of 7 shots from the floor and turned the ball over six times in the third period.

Coach Weddle said the Knights would be a “work in progress” this season. He gave several players opportunities in the final eight minutes, Hayes proved himself a good spot-up shooter by hitting 4 of 6 from 3-point range.
