METRO ROUNDUP: Rose to host midnight basketball practice

TERRE HAUTE — Rose-Hulman will host its first basketball “Midnight Madness” event Sunday, beginning at 11 p.m.

Midnight Madness will include free pizza, free T-shirts, giveaways and more than $2,000 in possible cash prizes.

Free pizza will be given to students and attendees when the doors open at 11 p.m., with competition contests among fans to begin at 11:30. All fans must arrive prior to 11:50 to receive a ticket to compete for the grand prize.

Rose basketball teams will take the floor at midnight, with fun and events to follow. The grand-prize opportunity will be held at approximately 1 a.m. Grand-prize competitors must be in attendance.

The Rose men return four starters from a team that finished 20-9, won the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference championship and earned a bid to the NCAA Division III tournament. The women return four starters from a team that earned the first postseason win in the 2011-12 HCAC tournament.


• Rose women rally to win — At Cincinnati, Rose-Hulman scored twice in the second half to defeat winless College of Mount St. Joseph 2-1 in women’s action Tuesday night.

Sophomore Nicky Wheeler turned a 1-0 deficit into a 1-1 tie with her third goal of the season in the 59th minute. Freshman Mallory McDevitt provided the assist.

Less than two minutes later, freshman Katie DeMoss booted home her seventh goal of the season to lift Rose to its second win of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference season. Junior Amanda Kingman was credited with the assist.

Freshman Lucinda Combs picked up the goalkeeping victory for the Engineers with seven saves.

Rose-Hulman (7-5-2 overall, 2-1-1 HCAC) will play host to Transylvania on Saturday at the Engineer Intramural Field. Mount St. Joseph dropped to 0-11-1 and 0-2-1 respectively.

• Both U12 teams win — The Terre Haute Flyers U12 girls teams both won Saturday, the Purple team beating Hoosier FC 4-3 and the White team downing the Cutters 5-2.

Goals for Purple were scored by Elizabeth Humphrey; Amani Brown, assisted by Orian Roshel; Humphrey, assisted by Sarah Chatman; and Chatman.

Brittly Stewart had two goals and Kayden Teffeteller, Haley Hagy and Mayson Barton one each for White.
