Swift takes NCAA podium for ISU in 60-meter hurdles

Johnson, Pounds also close indoor careers as All-Americans

FAYETTEVILLE, ARK. — Indiana State’s Greggmar Swift ran to a fourth-place finish in the men’s 60-meter hurdles, running 7.70 seconds in the finals at the NCAA Division I men’s and women’s indoor track and field championships Saturday.

Also Saturday, ISU teammates Brandon Pounds and Felisha Johnson closed out their indoor careers in an impressive fashion, with Pounds finishing seventh in the men’s weight throw and Johnson eighth in the women’s shot put.

Swift began his quest for the NCAA title in the 60 hurdles by running 7.72 in the first heat of the preliminaries Friday — good enough for fourth in the heat and seventh fastest overall.

Four-tenths of a second is all that separated the top four runners in the hurdle final with Florida’s Eddie Lovett running a meet-record 7.50 seconds to take the title. Texas A&M’s Wayne Davis II was second in 7.59 and Spencer Adams of Clemson third in 7.60.

“Swift didn’t get out well, but he finished great,” McNichols said.

Pounds’ best throw of the men’s weight-throw competition came on his third attempt when he went 68 feet, 11 1/4 inches, which put him seventh in the competition. The two points earned by Pounds were the first scored by a Sycamore men’s team indoors since 2001.

“Pounds was the elephant in the room. No one felt like it was over until he fouled his final throw in the finals,” McNichols said.

Johnson, who won the women’s weight throw title for the second time in three years Friday, came back to compete in the women’s shot put Saturday and placed with a distance of 55-9.

“Fe represented our team well,” ISU women’s coach Angela Martin said. “She will leave here as an NCAA champion, with two more All-American awards and two top-eight finishes. What a great way to finish her last indoor season as a Sycamore. I cannot wait to watch her outdoors.”

Johnson claimed her second national championship in three years as she won the 2013 NCAA title in the women’s weight throw Friday and broke the school record twice during the process. Johnson won the NCAA title in 2011 but finished fourth a year ago. This year, she was determined to reclaim the crown against some of the top throwers in the nation.

  • Andy Amey: Just a small trip to talk about this time

To paraphrase Carl Spackler, the heavy stuff’s not going to come for quite awhile. So while it’s true that I’m back from a week’s vacation, it’s not time — yet — for the big vacation column. Trips to Noblesville, Brunswick and Reelsville, while providing some nice family time, don’t really have the cachet to fill newspaper space.

LeBron James is going back to the Cleveland Cavaliers.
James told Sports Illustrated Friday that he’s decided to go home. It’s a move that would have seemed unfathomable four years ago, after the venomous fallout that followed his decision to leave Cleveland for the Miami Heat.
