PREP ROUNDUP: North and South to face off for tennis sectional title

TERRE HAUTE — The winner of the Terre Haute sectional for girls high school tennis will come down to Terre Haute North and Terre Haute South.

In the semifinals Wednesday, this year being played at North, the host Patriots blanked West Vigo 5-0 and the Braves whitewashed Sullivan 5-0.

The North-South sectional championship match is scheduled for 5 p.m. today at North. Should it be rained out, it would be pushed back to 5 p.m. Friday.

Terre Haute North 5, West Vigo 0

Singles — Anna Potter (THN) def. Kaylyn Cheeseman 6-1, 6-0; Laura Mascari (THN) def. Payton McCall 6-0, 6-1; Morgan Cook (THN) def. Justice Waltermire 6-0, 6-1.

Doubles — Meredith Egan-Olivia Caldwell (THN) def. Sydney Brown-Mackenzie Collins 6-0, 6-0; Caroline Potter-Carmen Nickels (THN) def. Sarah Wyrick-Makayla Herring 6-0, 6-1.


Terre Haute South 5, Sullivan 0

Singles — Lauren Hambrock (THS) def. Taylor Shake 6-0, 6-0; Jordan Davis (THS) def. Shelby Pierce 6-0, 6-1; Sofia Saylor (THS) def. Abigail Hornback 6-3, 6-1.

Doubles — Miranda Camp-Nicole Howe (THS) def. Shai Dean-Mikayla Turner 6-0, 6-0; Shivani Purohit-Courtney Sheets (THS) def. Gretchen Burkhart-Bridget Bailey 6-0, 6-0.

Next — North (9-6) and South (9-5) will meet for the sectional championship at 5 p.m. today at North. Sullivan finished with an 8-6 record and West Vigo ended up 0-17.


* West Vigo 12-15, Sullivan 0-2 — At West Vigo, Kyle Stewart went 5 for 5 with five runs and four RBI in a doubleheader sweep for the Vikings.

Highlights — For West Vigo, Kyle Stewart went 2 for 2 with 2 runs; Lucas Fagg had a two-run double; Brandon Behringer had 2 RBI; Derrick Bennett had a double and 2 RBI. 

Next — West Vigo (14-4, 4-1 Western Indiana Conference) plays tonight at North Vermillion. 


* Terre Haute South 11, Rockville 2 — At Rockville, Jacob Johnson went 3 for 5 with two RBI for the Braves.
