North boys make it three consecutive Vigo County golf titles

TERRE HAUTE — Terre Haute North made it three in a row in Vigo County boys high school golf championship action Wednesday at Hulman Links.

The Patriots shot 161 to edge Terre Haute South with 165. West Vigo carded 222.

North won in the same order it won a year ago at Rea Park when the Patriots bested the Braves 159-162.

In that one, South led until Andrew Behnke shot 39 to put the Patriots in the lead.

In Wednesday’s match, South had a one-shot lead after three scores had been posted. Behnke had low round of the day playing in the No. 4 slot, shooting two-over-par 38, and he again put the Patriots in the lead with that score.

“Andrew saved the day again. I will have to start calling him Mr. County,” said North coach Abe Nasser Jr. after the match played in one of the better days for golf this spring.

Behnke shared medalist honors a year ago and was medalist this season, shooting three shots better than he did in a match played Tuesday at Hulman Links.

He had one birdie in his round. “I hit a lot of fairways and made some good putts too,” said Behnke.

Drew Cahill led South with 39 for the second-low score of the afternoon with one birdie in his round. “I hit the ball pretty good … and left a couple putts out there,” he said.

Sam Pollock of North and Luke People of South tied for third medalist, each with 40 and each with a birdie.

Adam LaGrange had 41 and Dante Bagnoche and Ryan Baker each had 42 to round out the North scoring.

Sam Mims and Mario Foradori had 43s to complete South’s scoring.

“It was a tough day collectively. It was one of our roughest days in practices or matches … and found a way to win,” said Nasser.

South coach Chris Cassell said he was glad his team played better on the course than it had in the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference Championships. “We are still struggling to get four scores in the same day,” he said.

Brandon Long led the Vikings with 45 and Nick Leek had 48. “Both took a nine on No. 2,” said coach Travis Turpen.

West Vigo will vie for Western Indiana Conference honors at Idle Creek on Saturday and North will be in the Crawfordsville Invitational.

Cassell and Turpen will play in a U.S. Open Qualifier at Illini Country Club at Springfield, Ill., on Monday.
