North’s LaGrange takes fourth at MIC to lead Patriots to third-place finish

TERRE HAUTE — Carmel is the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference boys high school golf champ for the second year in a row.

The Greyhounds shot 306 on Saturday at Hulman Links to claim the title. Center Grove was second with 314 and Terre Haute North was a solid third with 317. Indianapolis North Central had 339 and Terre Haute South 345 to round out the top five.

Carmel senior Andrew Havil went 37-33 to finish with a 1-under-par 70 to take medalist honors for the second time in three years. He was second a year ago.

Havil had three birdies in his round to card his best 18-hole score of the season. He was fifth in the state last year and will play college golf at Indiana University.

Jackson Juerling of North Central was second low medalist with 75. The nephew of pro golfer Bo Van Pelt had two birdies in his round, going 38-37.

Peter Ciravolo of Carmel was third with 76 and Terre Haute North junior Adam LaGrange placed fourth. LaGrange also had three birdies in his round, carding 42 on the front and coming back for par-35 on the back.

Carmel coach Chad Carr said his team had its best 18-hole score of the year and placed fourth in the Spring Preview played at The Legends of Indiana. The Greyhounds were eighth in the state last year and everybody is back from that team.

Carmel is unbeaten in nine-hole matches and bested Indianapolis Cathedral and Zionsville in matches played earlier in the week.

North coach Abe Nasser Jr. was happy with the third-place finish of his team.

“To finish 11 shots back of the team ranked fifth in the state is great. We had some guys battle back to get some good scores,” he said.

The Patriots will play Rockville on Tuesday and vie for honors in a tournament to be played at the IU Course on Saturday. “Some of the top teams in the state will be in that one,” said Nasser.

“We’ll just look at this as a bad day and go on from here,” said South coach Chris Cassell.

The Braves will play Linton and Northview at Forest Park on Monday.
