TERRE HAUTE —
The field is down to 16 in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship with most of the top teams still in the field.
All but one of the No. 1 seeded teams are set for regional action. They are Indiana, Louisville and Kansas.
Gonzaga was the other top seed and didn’t make it thanks to being shocked by Wichita State. We watched most of that one as the Shockers rallied from a five-point deficit in the final eight minutes to win.
They owned the final eight minutes, going on a 23-10 run and making seven straight shots in one stretch — five of them 3-pointers. In the end, WSU made more 3-pointers in the game (14) than 2-point field goals (11), being good on half of its 3-point shots.
While Wichita State was the only team to beat a No. 1 seed, Florida Gulf Coast is the Cinderella team still alive in the tournament with victories over San Diego State and Georgetown; it will face state rival Florida this week. Miami of Florida is the third team from Florida in the field, after defeating Illinois in a tough game, and will take on Marquette.
The Big Ten has four of its teams set for regional action. Here’s how we see the final two rounds:
Midwest Regional — Louisville over Oregon, Michigan State over Duke, Louisville wins
West Regional — Wichita State over LaSalle, Ohio State over Arizona, OSU wins
South Regional — Michigan over Kansas, Florida over Florida Gulf Coast, Michigan wins
East Regional — Indiana over Syracuse, Miami over Marquette, IU wins
Finals — Louisville over OSU, IU over Michigan, IU wins
• VU fourth — Vincennes University’s men’s basketball team had a good week in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division I finals last week in Kansas.
The Trailblazers defeated Texas teams Lee College 84-80 and Howard College 70-65 before losing to NW Florida in the semifinals 76-69 and to Spartanburg in the third-place game 100-93 to take fourth after being seeded fifth in the event.
Central Florida bested NW Florida 74-69 in the championship game.
Darius Carter and DeShawn Delaney of VU both made the all-tourney team.
