Late rallies fell short both times Saturday as Indiana State dropped a Missouri Valley Conference softball doubleheader to visiting Missouri State by scores of 4-2 and 9-5 at Price Field.
“To compete in the Valley, you have to have an edge or toughness about you, an inner confidence knowing you can execute while sticking to the game plan,” coach Shane Bouman said afterward. “We have made great strides … but still have a ways to go to be where we want to be.”
Missouri State scored three runs in the first two innings of the first game before Morgan Allee hit her first career home run in the bottom of the third to make it 3-1.
After the Bears scored in the top of the seventh, the Sycamores got a run home on Megan Stone’s RBI single and had the tying run on base in the bottom of the inning. Stone was 3 for 4 for the game.
Missouri State scored four in the first and two in both the fourth and fifth innings for an 8-0 lead in the second game.
ISU got five runs on four hits in the bottom of the fifth, but came no closer. Paige Schreiner was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and Stone was 1 for 2 with an RBI for the Sycamores.
Now 11-17 overall, 2-4 in the MVC, the Sycamores travel to Bradley for a conference series that starts Friday. Missouri State is 12-15 and 3-2.
