ISU recruit Rhagen Smith makes Indiana All-Star team

LINTON — Like mother, like daughter.

Twenty-eight years after her mother Maria Stockberger (now Smith) was named to the Indiana All-Stars for girls high school basketball in 1985, Sullivan senior and Indiana State recruit Rhagen Smith learned this week that she will be a member of the same team in 2013.

The younger Smith, a 6-foot-2 post player who averaged 20.8 points and 9.6 rebounds this past season, told the Tribune-Star on Friday that she had dreamed of being an Indiana All-Star since “I was 4 or 5 years old.”

“I found out Monday,” she explained. “I got a call from Charlie Hall, the director of the Indiana All-Stars. When he told me who he was and what he was calling about, a huge emotion took over my body. I was so excited. I even got a little teary-eyed because I was so overwhelmed with emotion.

“It definitely made my week.”

A four-year standout at Sullivan, Smith led the Golden Arrows to a 23-3 record and first-place finish in the Western Indiana Conference in 2012-13. She’ll graduate with the most points — 1,690 — of any basketball player (male or female) in Sullivan history.

“Rhagen had an awesome year,” emphasized Sullivan coach Julie Meeks, who will serve as one of two assistants for Indiana girls all-star coach Mark Hurt of Mooresville in June.

“She had a great senior year and a great four years at Sullivan High School. She finished better inside and she became almost an 80-percent free-throw shooter this season. She got herself in better shape and she ran the floor well. … We’re very proud of her.”

The Arrows won their sectional championship with a 42-20 victory over North Knox on Feb. 9 before falling to Evansville Mater Dei in the regional title games. Smith later was named IBCA First Team All-State.

Smith became the 21st member of the ISU women’s basketball program to earn Indiana All-Star status. Barring unforeseen circumstances, she will be one of four former Indiana All-Stars on next season’s roster. Anna Munn (2010), Jessica Valley (2011) and Kasey Johnson (2012) were the others named to their respective all-star teams in high school.

Smith said she’ll report to Marian University on June 8 to start practicing with the rest of the all-stars. The Indiana All-Stars will play a pair of games with the Kentucky All-Stars, heading to Louisville on June 14 before returning to Indianapolis’ Bankers Life Fieldhouse on June 15.

According to an announcement Wednesday, Brownsburg’s 6-4 Stephanie Mavunga edged Hamilton Southeastern’s Taya Reimer to win the IndyStar’s Miss Basketball Award in the closest voting since 1999. Mavunga averaged 23.2 ppg this season.
