From Terre Haute to the majors: Eitel, Phegley recognized as Triple-A All-Stars

TERRE HAUTE — The MLB All-Star Game is set for Tuesday, and, while there’s no one representing the Wabash Valley in that contest, several minor league players from the Valley have had All-Star caliber first halves.

Terre Haute North grad Josh Phegley — leading all catchers in his league in home runs — was named to the International League All-Star team.

Phegley is a third-time All-Star in the International League, while Marshall, Ill., native Derek Eitel was named to his first Triple-A All-Star game. The Rose-Hulman graduate and right-handed relief pitcher for the Reno Aces has put up impressive numbers in the Pacific Coast League. Eitel has a 2.70 earned-run average with 60 strikeouts in 46 2/3 innings for the Diamondbacks’ top minor-league team.

Unfortunately, Eitel won’t be able to play in the All-Star game due to an abdomen strain that he suffered near the time of being selected to the team. He hopes to return in two weeks and hope for a September call-up to the Diamondbacks.

“I was really excited to go. I found out I made the All-Star team about four hours after I hurt myself,” Eitel said. “The timing is terrible for me. I won’t actually get to go to the All-Star Game. It’s my first time on the DL [in his career]. They think it will be two to four weeks. Be back for August and finish strong.”

Eitel appreciates all the support and encouragement he’s received from friends and family in Marshall and Terre Haute. The All-Stars in Triple-A are selected based on a three-part system that includes voting by fans, the league’s managers and general managers.

“I know a lot of people from Marshall voted and some of my coaches from Rose-Hulman sent out e-mails through campus and asked everyone to vote. It’s nice to have that support,” Eitel said.

Phegley will represent the Charlotte Knights for the third time in the game. He’s been on a tear in July with a .415 batting average with two homers, two doubles and a triple.

Phegley started slow in April, but he smacked six homers in May and five in June. His 13 homers are good for a tie for fifth in the International League.

His 21 doubles rank sixth in the league and his RBI total of 40 ranks in the top 20. Phegley is walking at a rate of 7.6 percent, which is the second highest mark of his pro career at any level. Defensively, Phegley has a .991 fielding percentage and has thrown out a solid 46 percent of attempted base stealers.

Phegley continues to work toward another chance to prove himself at the major league level. In addition to a 37.6 percent strikeout rate this season, Chicago catcher Tyler Flowers is batting .217 on the season with five home  runs and 26 RBI. Flowers has thrown out 31 percent of base stealers this season, better than his below-league average mark of 24 percent in 2013 and slightly better than Phegely’s mark of 30 percent in the majors.

Brady Shoemaker was also an All-Star in the Double-A Southern League, starting in left field in the game and connecting for a double and reaching on a walk in three at-bats in the game.

Despite a recent slump, Shoemaker is hitting .277 with 17 doubles, six homers and 44 RBI for the Jacksonville Suns.

A.J. Reed is back to being A.J. Reed after a slightly slow start with the Tri-City ValleyCats, a Class A Short Season team in the New York-Penn League. Reed has two home runs, two doubles and 10 RBI in his past five games, posting a .500 on-base percentage during that span.

If he keeps that up, reaching Double-A Corpus Christi may be a possibility by the end of the season.

Former Indiana State shortstop Tyler Wampler has had back-to-back multiple hit games to maintain his strong start with the Dodgers in the Rookie Arizona League. Wampler is hitting .286.

Former Sycamore Joe Thatcher was traded by the Arizona Diamondbacks to the Los Angeles Angels this past week, getting a chance to pitch in the American League in a chance to help a team make the playoffs.
