South shoots 149 to capture Vigo County boys golf championship

TERRE HAUTE — Terre Haute South shot a season-best 149 in ideal conditions Tuesday at Rea Park to win the Vigo County championship for boys high school golf teams.

Four players shot in the 30s for the Braves. Terre Haute North had two players in the 30s and shot 160, while West Vigo carded 191.

Drew Cahill and Darin Pemberton of South and Adam LaGrange of North all shot par-36 to share medalist honors. All three had two birdies in their rounds — it was a career best for Pemberton.

Braxton McIntyre had 38 and Ryan Cahill 39 to round out the South scoring. Gunar Alumbaugh had 38 and Cam Lewellyn and Luke Young each shot 43 for the Patriots and Nick Leek led the Vikings with 43.

LaGrange said Monday’s rain made for soft conditions. “The greens were aerated last week. … They were pretty bumpy,” he said.

Drew Cahill said he hit the ball “pretty well” and made a couple clutch putts and Pemberton said he had some good putts in shooting his career-best score.

North had won the last three county titles. Tuesday’s title was the eighth for South under coach Chris Cassell.

“It was very good. It was probably the first time for us to play to our potential. Hopefully, we are peaking at the right time,” Cassell said.

North coach Abe Nasser Jr. was not unhappy with the results.

“South really played well today. That 160 is a good score for us here,” said Nasser, whose Patriots play their matches at Hulman Links.

Weather permitting, West Vigo and South have matches scheduled today. All three teams will be in the Linton Sectional on Monday at Phil Harris Course.
