Terre Haute's junior American Legion team to play for state championship

INDIANAPOLIS — The junior American Legion baseball team from Wayne Newton Post 346 came out of the losers’ bracket Saturday night to advance to the state championship game that will be played today.

Terre Haute lost 9-5 to Rockport in Saturday’s first game, but came back to eliminate Newburgh in the late game. Post 346 plays Rockport again at 1 p.m. today.

Chase Jones had three hits and Brandon Taylor and Zack Edwards two each in the loss to Rockport.

Big blow in the win over Newburgh was a two-out hit by Damon Bass that drove in three runs and tied the score in the bottom of the fifth inning. Taylor scored the winning run on a passed ball in the sixth.

• LaGrange fifth — At Noblesville, Adam LaGrange placed fifth Friday in the Masters Tour junior event at Purgatory Golf Course.

LaGrange shot rounds of 75 and 74 for a 149 score in the two-day event. With three top-five finishes in four such events, he finished the season second in the point standings.



• Granda second — At Indianapolis, 12-year-old Andrew Granda finished second Friday in an Indiana Junior Golf Tour event at A.J. Thatcher Golf Course.

Granda shot a 74, three shots behind Akio Fujita of Carmel. A scorecard playoff enabled him to break a tie with two other golfers with 74 scores; he had a 35 on the back nine.



• Ace — At Mark’s Par Three, Mike Greene shot his second career hole-in-one on Friday, using an 8-iron on the 120-yard first hole.

Scott Foster and Dave Breeding witnessed the shot.

• Midnight run — At Fairbanks Park, the Wabash Valley Road Runners had their annual Midnight Run late Friday.

Sarah Lonneman was tops among 96 competitors in a one-mile fun run, while David Dalton won the 5K race that included 375 competitors.
